Living with Assurance: The Power of Faith in Christ

Summary

In the first chapter of Paul's Second Epistle to Timothy, we find a profound declaration of faith and assurance. Paul, despite his imprisonment and the looming threat of death, expresses a triumphant confidence in his relationship with Christ. He writes to Timothy, who is struggling with fear and despondency, to share the secret of his unwavering faith. Paul’s message is clear: he is not ashamed of his suffering because he knows whom he has believed. This knowledge of Christ gives him the strength to face life’s trials with a spirit of victory rather than defeat.

Paul’s philosophy of life is rooted in three key principles. First, he recognizes the supreme value of the soul. Unlike those who live solely for the body, mind, or emotions, Paul understands that the soul is the eternal part of us, the deposit that he has entrusted to Christ. This realization elevates his perspective beyond the temporal concerns of the world. Second, Paul lives in the light of "that day," the day of judgment when all will stand before Christ. This eternal perspective shapes his view of life, making earthly trials seem insignificant in comparison to the eternal destiny of the soul. Finally, Paul’s knowledge of Christ is the cornerstone of his faith. He knows Christ as the Son of God, who has appeared in the world, conquered death, and offers salvation not based on our works but on His grace.

Paul’s message to Timothy, and to us, is a call to live with the same assurance and confidence. It is a reminder that our lives should be centered around the eternal value of our souls, lived in the light of eternity, and anchored in the knowledge of Christ. This is the secret to facing life’s challenges with peace and joy, knowing that our souls are safe in the hands of the Savior.

Key Takeaways:

- The Supreme Value of the Soul: Paul emphasizes the importance of recognizing the soul as our most precious possession. Unlike the body, which is temporary, the soul is eternal and imperishable. This understanding shifts our focus from the fleeting concerns of the world to the eternal significance of our spiritual well-being. [16:04]

- Living in Light of Eternity: Paul’s perspective is shaped by the awareness of "that day," the day of judgment. This eternal outlook helps us prioritize our lives, understanding that our actions and decisions have eternal consequences. It encourages us to live with purpose and intentionality, knowing that our ultimate destiny is determined by our relationship with Christ. [30:36]

- The Assurance of Knowing Christ: Paul’s confidence stems from his personal knowledge of Christ. This relationship is not based on abstract beliefs but on a deep, personal connection with the Savior. Knowing Christ as the Son of God who has conquered death provides a foundation of assurance and peace, enabling us to face life’s uncertainties with confidence. [37:31]

- The Power of Christ’s Resurrection: Paul highlights the power of Christ’s resurrection as the ultimate victory over death. This power assures us that our souls are secure in Christ, who has triumphed over every enemy, including death itself. This assurance allows us to live without fear, knowing that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ. [44:21]

- Salvation by Grace, Not Works: Paul reminds us that our salvation is not based on our works but on God’s grace. This truth liberates us from the burden of trying to earn God’s favor and allows us to rest in the finished work of Christ. It is a call to trust in His grace and to live in the freedom and joy that comes from knowing we are loved and accepted by God. [43:12]

Quotes

Now in these glowing words the great Apostle in a very characteristic and typical statement gives us his view of life if you like his philosophy of Life tells us of the way in which he is able to face life with all its difficulties and its problems and its trials and it's very interesting that he does so here and on this occasion in this letter to this young man Timothy. [00:58:36]

Christianity is that which enables the men to look at life at its worst and darkest and starkest and then say, nevertheless, and he's the only man who can say that. Nevertheless, says the Apostle, I am not ashamed. Now these terms are a little bit important and that's why I'm stopping with them before I expound his message to you. [05:13:13]

Here is a man who can rise above his surroundings. Here is a man I say who Towers up above it all he's mastered life he's conquered life he knows the secret of victory in life and the result is that he can face the future with all its uncertainties with perfect Equanimity he's got an assurance which nothing can disturb. [08:18:56]

The first thing that accounts for this attitude of the Apostle is that he had realized the Supreme value of the soul for the which cause I also suffer these things nevertheless I am not ashamed why well for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. [14:14:56]

This man had come to realize that life is isn't merely something that belongs to the mind either that's better than the life of the body only but still it's incomplete there are others who live solely in terms of the affections the heart and the emotions and their whole life is centered around that they think of it they talk about it they dream about it. [19:55:64]

The second thing about this man's Outlook was that he lived his life in the light of what he calls that day for the which cause I also suffer these things nevertheless I am not ashamed for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. [28:25:88]

The Apostle Paul lived his life ever always as under the shadow of that day that is the second strand or element in his philosophy of life he knew that a time was coming a day was coming when history would come to an end and the world would come to an end and when the whole world would have to stand in judgment before the Son of God. [30:23:20]

Paul had this marvelous view of life I say because of his knowledge of the worth of the Soul because of his knowledge of the certain coming of that day ah yes but above and beyond it all was his knowledge of Christ and without this the other knowledge would produce nothing but misery and Dread and Terror and alarm. [36:19:76]

The secret of the apostle was his personal knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ personally he says I'm perfectly happy I'm quite content I'm not a bit disturbed I'm not ashamed I know him and I know that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. [37:56:04]

He has put death out of commission and he has brought life and incorruption to light through his gospel I am not worrying about my my soul not about my future says Paul it's in the safekeeping of one who not only conquered the devil and his Temptations while he was in this world he's even conquered death in the grave. [44:41:19]

I know whom I have believed and I know that neither death nor life nor angels nor principalities nor powers nor things present nor things to come nor height nor depth nor any other creature shall be able to separate me from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus my Lord nothing can touch this power. [45:41:96]

I know him I know he's the son of God and I know that he loves me he's died for me he came into the world for me he lay down his life for me he'll keep me ah yes he says I know his power also did you notice how he put that he says but Is Now manifested by The appearing of Our Savior Jesus Christ.
