Anybody feel wiser as you've been going through the book of Proverbs? You feel like you've learned some things? All right, a couple of folks. Wisdom will save us. Living a life of wisdom can save us from a lot of unnecessary pain that we will experience in life. If we choose to ignore the way that God has set things up in the world, okay? As parents, those of us who have kids, we want our kids to get wisdom and to get understanding. We want them to do well, and the scripture provides for us a way that we can live wise. My son, do not forget my teaching but let your heart keep my commandments for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you bind them around your neck write them on the tablet of your heart so you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man trust in the lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make straight your paths be not wise in your own eyes fear the lord and turn away from evil for it will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones honor the lord with your wealth with the first fruits of all your produce then your barns will be filled with plenty and your vats will be bursting with wine. One author says that shalom refers to the harmony of relationships and wholeness including health that comes from understanding God's creation purposes and the recognition that his blessings are experienced in the physical world. Jews to this day they often speak a blessing over one another and they say shalom. And on the Sabbath day they say Shabbat shalom. In the New Testament we see the Apostle Paul saying grace and peace be with you. And ultimately we find shalom in the prince of shalom and the prince of shalom, the prince of peace, King Jesus. Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you. These are two characteristics that are described about, that God describes himself as in the Old Testament. Do y 'all remember when God revealed himself to Moses and he passed by and he proclaimed his name saying, the Lord is gracious, the Lord gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. This is who God is. His glory is revealed in who he is and he is, he has steadfast love and he has faithfulness. [00:08:41] (38 seconds)

Trust in the Lord with all heart and do not lean on your own understanding. We know this, but it's not as easy to practice. It's not as easy to put to practice when we're going through difficult times to trust God how often do we turn to many other resources to trust in like our money or like our own wisdom or like our own strength. [00:12:14] (29 seconds)

And too many of us are like that guy on all fours, creeping along the way, not trusting God, not living wholeheartedly, leaning on Jesus. We are wired to live wholeheartedly, loving God, trusting God, walking with God. And as one one old writer says, this is the glory of God, that man be fully alive, that we live wholeheartedly rather than half heartedly. We're wired for this. Jesus came to give us life and life abundantly. [00:17:30] (42 seconds)

And so we're to trust him and not lean on our own understanding. We're to imitate God's ways. We're to learn his word and we're to fear the Lord. This is key. And the Proverbs has already said this. If we're going to get wisdom, this is the starting point. And this is the governing principle for the wise life. Fear the Lord. Reverence God. Live with the awareness that God sees everything, that God is everywhere, that we will give an account to him and that he is for us. [00:21:27] (36 seconds)

By the fear of the Lord, one departs from evil, Proverbs says, in another place. One turns away from evil, Proverbs says, in another place. away from sinful paths by fearing God. And by choosing sin rather than choosing God, we do damage to ourselves. Emotional damage, spiritual damage, and even physical damage. I mean, think about the alcoholic. The Proverbs warns about the drunkard and the damage that's done to his or her body because of alcohol. [00:22:47] (33 seconds)

Verse nine and 10 says, honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your produce. And then your barns will be filled with plenty and your vats will be bursting with wine. Again, this is probably a verse that many prosperity preachers are gonna camp out on and preach. But according to this verse, there are some positive effects that come when we honor God in this area of our lives. And this is a very practical way to live wisely. [00:25:07] (38 seconds)

The Lord disciplines those he loves. Have you, do you see that as, when you're going through discipline from God, do you see that as an act of love, that God cares for you enough, that he's going to let you experience some pain, to protect you in the long run, to shape you into something that is so much better than what you have vision for?
