Sermon Summary

John 4 sets Jesus down at a public well in Samaria, tired, thirsty, and right where the fish are. Jesus does not wait for a worship service or a cleaned-up situation. Jesus sits in the heat of the day and speaks to a Samaritan woman, an outsider among outsiders, and his first words are simple: “Give me a drink.”

Wisdom from above shows up here as more than having information. Wisdom fears the Lord, walks with God, and knows how to win souls. Jesus shows that witness is not first a technique, a program, or a memorized map. The Holy Spirit gives power, and the gospel becomes something a believer “can’t help but speak” because Christ has been seen and heard.

Jesus does not avoid where sinners are. Jesus goes where salt can actually touch what needs preserving and seasoning. Salt left in the shaker does nothing. Jesus is a friend of sinners, and his example pushes believers out of the holy huddle and back toward wells, drinking fountains, workplaces, neighborhoods, and conversations with people who are thirsty and do not yet know why.

Jesus initiates the conversation and speaks her language. To Nicodemus he says “born again.” To the hungry he is bread. To the thirsty he offers living water. At a well, with a woman carrying a water jar, Jesus starts with water because she understands water. He lets her minister to him by asking for a drink, making himself vulnerable instead of standing above her.

Living water makes her curious because she does not understand it yet. Jesus refuses to take the bait when she brings up Jacob and Samaritans and old arguments. He does not quarrel. He keeps the conversation on mission, showing that the well water will satisfy for a moment, but thirst will come back again.

Living water exposes the deeper thirst. Jesus says, “Go call your husband,” not to humiliate her, but to put his finger on the empty fountain she keeps returning to. Five husbands have not satisfied her, and the man she has now will not hold water either. Her life reveals what every dry soul reveals: broken cisterns cannot do what only the fountain of living waters can do.

Jesus offers more than heaven later. Jesus offers water that becomes a spring inside, rising up to eternal life. The Spirit satisfies the soul, bears witness that the believer belongs to God, and overflows into blessing for others. Everyone is looking for Jesus, even when the search is hidden under money, sex, success, education, fame, or another dried-up well.

There was it was mutual destruction they felt toward each other. They're both convinced they're right about all kinds of things, and the Samaritans obviously were not right according to the bible, but they had their own version of the bible.”
