“Whoever clenches too closely will lose what they're clenching to. Whoever lets it go and surrenders it to God will find their life in their savior. The Samaritan woman unclenched her fist. She opened her hand, letting go of the things that she clung to, her animosity toward the Jews, her shame over her sins, her heritage and and any claim to truth that she might have had. She let go of her whole life in a way. Perhaps because she had much less to lose than someone like Nicodemus.”

“I think this is one of the the big misconceptions that people both inside and outside of the church have about church. The answer ought to be need. We need to be here because here is where we get the living water. The church is the well that springs up to eternal life. The church is what God has promised to give us, where he has promised to give us our savior Christ. Word and sacrament is where the living water of Christ bubbles forth and you can't have word and sacrament by yourself.”
