So often, the truths we know best can lose their impact simply because of their familiarity. Yet, God invites us to approach even the most well-known passages with open hearts, ready to receive fresh revelation from the Holy Spirit. As human beings, we are made up of body, soul, and spirit. Before Christ, our lives are dominated by the flesh—our natural selves, driven by mind, will, and emotions. But when we are born again, God’s supernatural life enters our spirits, and His desire is that our souls—our thoughts, desires, and feelings—come under the influence of His Spirit. This is a journey, especially in a culture that elevates personal happiness, individual freedom, and logic above all else.
God calls us to live from the Spirit, not the soul. This means learning to hear His voice and obey, even when it runs counter to what our culture values. One area where this is especially important is in the operation of spiritual gifts. Just as we each have unique natural talents, every believer receives spiritual gifts when they are born again. These gifts are not distributed according to our preferences, but as the Holy Spirit determines, and they are given for the common good—to serve others and bring glory to God.
Many of these gifts, especially those involving words—prophecy, words of wisdom, words of knowledge, tongues, and interpretation—carry immense creative power. God created the universe by speaking, and our words, when inspired by the Spirit, can release life, destiny, and transformation. However, it is crucial that we do not confuse soulish encouragement with true spiritual gifts. Encouragement is valuable, but prophecy and other gifts must originate from the Spirit, not our own reasoning or desires.
The purpose of these gifts is not self-promotion or personal fulfillment, but love—serving others and glorifying God. When we operate in the gifts with the right motives, we become channels of God’s grace in its various forms. The Holy Spirit does not override our will; He seeks our partnership, our “yes.” As we say yes to Him, He empowers us to walk in a new spiritual dimension, releasing eternal impact through our lives. Even when the enemy tries to oppose us in the area of our gifting, God calls us to fan into flame what He has given, trusting Him to bring fruit that lasts for eternity.
1 Thessalonians 5:23 (ESV) — > Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
John 3:5-6 (ESV) — > Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
1 Corinthians 12:4-11 (ESV) — > Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
