Living Simply: The Cost and Commitment of Faith

Summary

Living a life of simplicity and deep commitment to God is a profound lesson I learned from a dear friend who is now in the presence of God. This friend, despite leading millions, owned very little. He had no savings, just an old VW Bug, and lived in modest accommodations, whether in India or Dallas. His life was a testament to living with less to give more. Even when financial allegations arose, a thorough investigation revealed his integrity; he earned little and gave away most of it. His meals were simple, reflecting his desire to give everything away. This simplicity was not just about material possessions but a spiritual posture of coming before God with nothing, ready to give everything.

In India, I encountered believers whose commitment to Christ was astonishing. I asked a local bishop if there were areas with casual Christians, and he was puzzled by the question. In India, baptism often means losing everything—family, job, and social standing. The bishop shared his own story of being disowned by his father at a young age for choosing Christ, illustrating the cost of discipleship. This level of commitment is why my friend was saddened by the state of the church in America, where casual Christianity seems prevalent. He was heartbroken by stories of moral failures among Christian leaders, longing for them to truly know Jesus.

This reflection challenges us to examine our own lives. Are we living simply and giving generously? Are we committed to Christ, even if it costs us everything? The call is to live with a deep, unwavering commitment to God, not casually but with the understanding that following Jesus is worth any sacrifice.

Day 1: Living with Less to Give More
Living a life of simplicity allows individuals to focus on what truly matters: their relationship with God and their ability to give to others. This simplicity is not just about material possessions but a spiritual posture of coming before God with nothing, ready to give everything. The example of a friend who owned very little, yet led millions, illustrates how living with less can be a powerful testimony of faith and trust in God's provision. His meals were simple, reflecting his desire to give everything away. Even when faced with financial allegations, his integrity was proven through a thorough investigation, revealing that he earned little and gave away most of it. This lifestyle challenges us to examine our own lives and consider how we can live simply to give generously. [00:13]

"Better is a little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble with it." (Proverbs 15:16, ESV)

Reflection: What is one area of your life where you can simplify to focus more on your relationship with God and generosity towards others?

Day 2: Embracing Sacrifice for True Commitment
True commitment to Christ often requires sacrifice. In some parts of the world, following Jesus means losing everything, yet believers embrace this with joy, knowing they gain Christ. The story of a bishop in India who was disowned by his father for choosing Christ illustrates the cost of discipleship. This level of commitment challenges us to evaluate the depth of our own commitment to Christ. Are we willing to lose everything for the sake of Christ? This reflection calls us to live with a deep, unwavering commitment to God, not casually but with the understanding that following Jesus is worth any sacrifice. [03:44]

"And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." (Matthew 10:38-39, ESV)

Reflection: What is one thing you hold dear that you would struggle to give up for Christ? How can you begin to surrender this to Him today?

Day 3: Integrity and Generosity as Hallmarks of Faith
Integrity and generosity are hallmarks of a life devoted to God. Even when faced with scrutiny, living transparently and giving generously reflect a heart aligned with God's purposes. The example of a friend who, despite financial allegations, was found to have lived with integrity and generosity, challenges us to examine our own lives. Are we living transparently and giving generously? This reflection calls us to align our hearts with God's purposes, living a life marked by integrity and generosity. [01:33]

"Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out." (Proverbs 10:9, ESV)

Reflection: In what ways can you demonstrate integrity and generosity in your daily interactions this week?

Day 4: The High Cost and Greater Reward of Discipleship
The cost of discipleship is high, but the reward is greater. Being willing to lose everything for the sake of Christ is a profound act of faith that God honors and blesses. The story of believers in India who embrace the loss of family, job, and social standing for the sake of Christ challenges us to consider the cost of our own discipleship. Are we willing to pay the price for following Jesus? This reflection calls us to live with the understanding that the reward of knowing Christ is worth any sacrifice. [04:32]

"For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison." (2 Corinthians 4:17, ESV)

Reflection: What is one sacrifice you can make this week to deepen your relationship with Christ, knowing the eternal reward is far greater?

Day 5: The Urgency of Deep Devotion
The state of the church should concern us deeply. Casual Christianity is a contradiction; our faith should be marked by deep devotion and a longing to truly know Jesus. The sadness of a friend over the state of the church in America, where casual Christianity seems prevalent, challenges us to examine our own faith. Are we living with deep devotion and a longing to truly know Jesus? This reflection calls us to live with urgency, seeking a faith marked by deep devotion and a true knowledge of Christ. [05:27]

"Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded." (James 4:8, ESV)

Reflection: How can you intentionally draw nearer to God this week, moving beyond casual faith to deep devotion?
