God has declared that those who are in Christ are not just random individuals, but a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a people for His own possession. This identity is not based on your performance, background, or worthiness, but solely on His love and mercy. You are not chosen because you were the best, but because God set His love on you. He made you, saved you, and purchased you with the precious blood of Jesus, and He will preserve you. Your new identity is a gift, and it is the foundation for everything you do as a follower of Christ. [05:05]
1 Peter 2:9-10 (ESV)
"But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy."
Reflection: When you think about your life, do you truly see yourself as chosen, loved, and set apart by God—or do you still let your past or your performance define you? What would it look like to live today out of your true identity in Christ?
Throughout Scripture, God always establishes identity before giving instructions for activity. He rescued Israel before giving them the law, and in Christ, He gives you a new identity before calling you to live differently. When you forget who you are, your actions become empty or burdensome. But when you remember that you are already loved, chosen, and made new, your obedience flows from gratitude and security, not from striving or fear. Let your activity today be rooted in the unshakeable truth of who you are in Jesus. [13:29]
Exodus 19:3-6 (ESV)
"While Moses went up to God, the Lord called to him out of the mountain, saying, 'Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel."
Reflection: In what area of your life have you been trying to “do better” without first remembering who you are in Christ? How can you pause today to let your identity as God’s beloved shape your actions?
Jesus is the cornerstone of the church and of your life. Without Him at the center, everything else collapses. The church is not built on personalities, programs, or even good works, but on the explicit, proclaimed reality of Jesus—His life, death, resurrection, and return. If Christ is not the foundation, all our efforts are in vain. Make it your aim to keep Jesus at the front of your life, your conversations, and your witness, so that everything you do points back to Him. [24:20]
1 Peter 2:4-7 (ESV)
"As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture: 'Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.' So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, 'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.'"
Reflection: Is there any area of your life, ministry, or relationships where Jesus has become assumed or secondary rather than central? What would it look like to explicitly put Christ at the center today?
You have one job: to proclaim the excellencies of the One who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. This is not just about words, but about living in such a way that your life is a show-and-tell of God’s grace, mercy, and power. When you live out your identity, people are drawn to the Jesus you love. Your story, your transformation, and your worship are meant to be public, so that others might be attracted to Christ and come to know Him too. [01:09:18]
Isaiah 43:1-7 (ESV)
"But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: 'Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life. Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you. I will say to the north, Give up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth, everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.'"
Reflection: Who in your life needs to see and hear about the excellencies of Jesus today? What is one specific way you can “show and tell” the story of God’s grace to them?
As sojourners and exiles, you are called to live differently in a world that may not understand or welcome your faith. The passions of the flesh wage war against your soul, and the world may boo or reject you, but you are called to abstain from sin and keep your conduct honorable. Don’t hoard the light among believers—take it out into the world, so that others may see your good deeds and glorify God. Your distinctiveness, your “weirdness” for Christ, is your witness. [01:11:47]
1 Peter 2:11-12 (ESV)
"Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation."
Reflection: Where are you tempted to “switch jerseys” and blend in with the world instead of standing out for Christ? What is one practical way you can resist temptation and shine as salt and light today?
The Lord Jesus Christ has accomplished the greatest victory in history—He “crossed up” death itself, rose from the grave, and now calls us to live in the light of that triumph. Our identity as believers is not something we earn or achieve; it is a gift rooted in God’s mercy, love, and sovereign choice. We are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a people for His own possession. This identity is not based on our performance or worthiness, but on God’s unchanging character and the finished work of Christ. Before God ever calls us to activity, He grounds us in identity. Just as Israel was redeemed before receiving the law, so too are we redeemed and made new before being called to live out our faith.
Peter’s words in 1 Peter 2 echo the Old Testament, showing that God’s plan has always been to create a people for Himself—not just from one ethnicity or nation, but from all nations, united by the new birth in Christ. Our diversity is swallowed up in unity, and our unity is made beautiful by diversity, all purchased by the blood of Jesus. We are not chosen because we are lovable or impressive, but simply because God set His love upon us. This love is not dependent on our performance; it is rooted in God’s own character.
As a royal priesthood, we have access to God’s presence—not for selfish gain, but to intercede for others. Our prayers and lives are meant to benefit the world around us, not just ourselves. Holiness means being set apart, distinct, and even “weird” in the eyes of the world. The early church was marked by radical love, unity across ethnic lines, and a worship that centered on Christ’s finished sacrifice. We are called to maintain that distinctiveness, not by retreating from the world, but by living as “elect exiles”—visitors who expect opposition, yet remain faithful.
Our one job is to proclaim the excellencies of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. This is a “show and tell” life: our conduct and our words together point to Jesus. We abstain from the passions of the flesh, not to earn God’s favor, but because we are already His. Our lives are meant to be salt and light, so that others might see and glorify God. Christ’s victory is our victory, and our calling is to broadcast His goodness to all nations until He returns.
1 Peter 2:1-12 (ESV) —
> So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” and “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.
