Love is never paid off we we can never say well I love them enough, moving on, because has has Christ done that to us does God ever say I've loved you enough I'm moving on no God has never never gives up on us his love never ends and the word here that is love we've talked about this before is agape probably heard that it's the Greek word this is a love that is sacrif sacrificial it's Christ centered it is self-giving for the good of another and that brings us to the second thing that we see in this passage in this part about love is we see the moral law and the Christian. [00:05:25]

Paul here affirms the continuing Authority of God's moral law in the life of Believers he he lays out these ex e examples of laws in the Old Testament and then he says and all of these laws there all any other law it's summed up in this that you shall love your neighbor as yourself now when I say the in continuing Authority does that mean we're still bound under under the law to obey it to try and make ourselves right with God no that's not what I'm saying what I'm saying is the moral law of God continues to show the Christian what the Christian life is to look like to show us what righteousness looks like. [00:07:30]

Remember I said aape this word about love there's a lot of ideas in our world today about what the word love means aren't there there's a lot of ideas about what is love love uh has and I've said it before and I'll say it again we have a uh we are word poor in English when it comes to the word love the Greek had four different words for love we have one and I have to use the same word to say how much I love pizza and how much I love my wife those are two very different things but it's the same word so we can get into some trouble if we don't give ourselves some definitions of what in the world is love and that's where the moral law of God shows us. [00:08:24]

Paul tells us that love is fulfilling the law so there's a content to love and the content is what has God said in his word that's the content so if you want to know what love looks like you have to know what God says in his law so uh Jesus said in Matthew 5:17 he says do not think I came to abolish the law or the prophets but I did not come to abolish but to fulfill Jesus didn't come to say no more law do whatever you want he said no I'm fulfilling this and by the spirit we obey Christ that will lead us to look like Jesus and to obey his law. [00:09:17]

The law and love are not enemies they're in-laws United by their relationship to Jesus without Christ the law is powerless without the law love is directionless Law and love are connected inseparably by their relationship to Jesus Christ, without law or without Christ law is powerless and without law love is directionless, so be in the word if you want to know how to love your neighbor if you want to know how to obey this command love your neighbor as yourself be in the word what does God say. [00:10:50]

This true biblical love does no harm verse vers 10 he says love does no wrong to a neighbor therefore love is the Fulfillment of the law this true biblical love it's Agape Love This Love that is directed by the law of God that is found fulfilled in Christ is not emotionalism and sentimentality real love is not just feelings it is also about active obedience to God's command 1 Corinthians 13:6 says love does not rejoice in unrighteousness but rejoices in the truth biblical love does not ignore sin but seeks the spiritual good of the of those that loves. [00:11:54]

Love is also not is more than not violating God's commands right what is the he said all those Commandments he he laid out you shall not commit adultery you shall not murder you shall not steal you don't love your neighbor if you're committing adultery with their spouse right that's not love you don't love your neighbor if you murder them that obvious you don't love them if you've murdered them you don't love your neighbor if you are stealing what's theirs it's not love love love has content but it's not it's more than not disobeying God's commands it's more than that real love. [00:12:46]

Real love see the this is part of where the law was limited the law just said don't do that Jesus says the law is more than that love calls us not only to not murder but to seek to bless the ones that we love not only not to steal but to seek to share not only do we not commit adultery but we hold fast in love and faithfulness and we encourage the love and faithfulness of others love is more than simply not disobeying love calls us to positive action to do things like we looked at weeks ago in Romans 12 uh where he says things like we are to abore abhor what is evil cling to what is good be devoted to one another in brotherly love give preference to one another in honor. [00:13:33]

Paul is exhorting us to spiritual vigilance not complacency I want to see what Jesus I want us to see what Jesus had to say about this very thing in Matthew 24 he says therefore be on the alert for you do not know which day your Lord is coming be sure of this that if the head of the house had known at what time the night the thief was coming he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be broken into for this reason you also must be ready for the Son of God is coming at an hour when you do not think he will who then is the faithful and sensible slave whom his master put in charge of his household to give them their food at the proper time bless bled is that slave whom his master finds doing so when he comes. [00:15:40]

So Jesus himself exhorts his disciples us to spiritual vigilance now I know I I I I think you guys might think the same way I do when I read something like that sometimes I think it's been 2,000 years since he said it was short and we can that that is an easy way that perspective that thought process it's been 2,000 years that can lead us to complacency that can lead us to say well it's been 200,00 years who knows maybe be 10,000 more I don't know it's not now obviously or what it should put us to thinking is it's been 2,000 years it could be any minute that's where that's how Paul lived it could be any minute. [00:16:38]

As Christians we have been saved we are being saved the scripture says 1 Corinthians 1 says the word of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing but to us who are being saved it is the power of God we are being saved and we call that sanctification so we are have been saved we've been made right with God it's a big fancy word justification we have been made righteous we have been made right in good standing with God we've been Justified we have been saved we are being saved we are being made more and more like Jesus we are having the the yuck removed from us and the good put into us and that's called sanctification. [00:19:00]

Paul calls us he says to cast off lay aside the Deeds of Darkness because the night is almost gone I want you to see 2 Corinthians 6 he says he Paul also calls us he talks about this in a different way he says do not be bound together with unbelievers for what partnership has righteousness and lawlessness what Fellowship has light with Darkness how much more is that true inside of one person in that verse he's talking about don't have fellowship with unbelievers but I'm talk in this verse he's talking about we should lay aside the Deeds of darkness in us if light and darkness have no Fellowship how can they exist in the same person we need to be working to cast aside lay aside throw away take off darkness in our lives. [00:21:55]

He doesn't do that he says and In this passage there no different he says lay aside the Deeds of darkness and then verse the end of verse 12 he says and put on the armor of light we lay aside Darkness we put on light and this this word armor reminds us of spiritual warfare the time is near and the battle is real and we we all know Ephesians 6 this passage about the most famous passage about spiritual warfare it says put on the full armor of God so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil for our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers the powers and against the world forces of this Darkness against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the Heavenly places. [00:22:45]

Paul tells us in verse 13 let us behave properly as in the day not in carousing and drunkenness not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality not in strife and jealousy Paul condemns six specific sins but I don't think he would want us to think that only these things are the things we need to worry about though we should but I think they also represent broader categories of sin carousing and drunkenness sexual promiscuity and sensuality honestly those things the the world celebrates thinking I'm thinking you know nightclubs and drinking parties and all kinds of you know every movie you watch these days that's all in there what do those things have in common they're obvious you know when it's happening. [00:25:00]

I love this image of putting on the Lord Jesus Christ he could have just said something he could have left it at behave properly don't do these kinds of things be like Jesus he could have said be like Jesus he could have been he could have said act the way that you think the Lord Jesus Christ would act he didn't say that he said put on put on the Lord Jesus Christ this is more than a merely outward religious activity this is more than playacting like Jesus this is putting him on and identifying completely with Jesus Christ in and Paul talks a lot about this the the phrase in Christ in Christ is the most common com combination of of words in Paul's writings. [00:29:08]

This is what it means to put on the Lord Jesus Christ that we recognize with Paul that we have been crucified with Jesus and we are not the one living this life anymore we're not pretending we're we're identifying with Christ we're recognizing that I'm a new creature I've put on Jesus the old me is dead and I live this life now by faith in the Son of God and this is a daily Pursuit and I'm not going to pretend to you guys that I've figured out how to do it perfectly I think we we all are going to be struggling with this the rest of our lives but that's okay because that's what we've been called to that's what we have been saved for. [00:30:43]

When Jesus died on that cross when we were crucified with him he didn't just take our sin when he took our sin and died for it he then gave us his righteousness a righteousness that's not our own that's the justification we are made right with God because God gave us Christ's righteousness but that leads to practical righteousness that leads to us growing in faith we live out of what we are we are made right with God and so we live out of that and seek to look more and more like that every single day. [00:33:30]

Christianity is not a passive religion we are to actively put to death sin in our lives and make no provision for flesh but to walk by the spirit so today in closing we see that love is the Fulfillment of the law and the Love Has content to it love is not a uh warm fuzzy love is seeking to do good for our neighbor it's seeking to obey our King and so how do we know what Love's content is is we need to know what God's word says and recognize that God's law is still relevant to us today and still tells us what love looks like and we need to be people of Love recognize that our debt of Love is never paid off.
