1. "It matters how you live on the outside, because that is how we have confidence or assurance that God has done a work on the inside. Now, it's been kind of intense, right? If you're receiving this letter and you're reading it, it's a little bit intense, but his intensity is not toward his readers, but against those who are doing the false teaching." 2. "Notice what he says to them. They are forgiven. They know Christ their Savior. They've overcome the evil one. They know the Father. They are strengthened. The Word of God dwells in them. John is giving them gospel affirmation. He's assuring them that, yes, you have the right gospel. You believe the right gospel. You are living out the right and true gospel." 3. "Jesus is that one. In His humanity, He stood in our place, and He bore the wrath of God's judgment against sin. And in His humanity, it killed Him. But in His deity, He rose from the grave, conquering death. This is our gospel promise. That our sins are forgiven, because Jesus bore them in our place." 4. "We can know Jesus as we read His Word. When's the last time you've read about Jesus in the Gospels? I want to encourage you to read Gospel accounts. But simply knowing about Jesus is not the full meaning of this idea of knowing Him." [11:51] (20 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

5. "To know Jesus is to imitate Jesus. To know Jesus is to be identified with Him. But this still is not the full meaning of knowing Christ. We don't just want to know Him as know facts about Him. And we don't just want to know Him by being identified with Him. But more than that, we can know Him by being in relationship with Him." 6. "The very heart of the Christian faith is to know and be known by Christ. Jesus gave a warning in Matthew. He said, Yeah, but I knew all these facts about you. Yeah, but I live for you. Yeah, but I didn't know you. It's not a list of behaviors. It's not a list of religious activities. It's not a list of doctrines, but a relationship established by the life and death of our Savior." 7. "Because by the work of Christ and their trust in it, believers have overcome the evil one, the devil. The devil prowls around like a lion. Looking for someone to devour, but we are safe and secure in Christ. Not that he can't have influence, but he cannot have us because we belong to the Lord. We cannot be plucked from the Father's hand. We cannot be condemned. We are not subject to the penalty of sin, nor are we under its power." 8. "In the face of temptation in Christ, we can stand strong and immovable. In the face of distraction, we in Christ, we can stand strong and not be moved. And in the face of the evil one, in Christ, we can stand strong and not be moved." [24:57] (22 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

9. "We are exhorted not to be conformed to the pattern of this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Again, this ability, this gospel promise to these, what he says, young men, they've overcome the evil one, to be strong in the face of temptation and distraction and distortion does not come from ourselves." 10. "John is writing to assure them. He's writing to encourage them. He's writing to strengthen them. And if you know Jesus, then this is true of you. And you can be encouraged and you can be assured. This is written to you, friends. Because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name."
