And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. [00:29:40]

The sealing here is the guarantee by the Spirit that we're going to make it. We can make it to the end where they're going to be no dropouts for those who are sealed by the Spirit. Now the question is, how does he do that? And the biblical answer is he's the Holy Spirit. [00:39:40]

He seals, guarantees by keeping, that is, by keeping us holy because he is holy. In other words, he keeps us for the day of redemption for our inheritance by keeping us holy because Hebrews 12:14 says strive for peace with everyone and for the holiness without which we will not see the Lord. [00:44:40]

If the Holy Spirit doesn't preserve us in real holiness we won't ever see the Lord. There is a holiness without which we will not see the Lord. He's keeping, his guaranteeing, his sealing, it's not like him snapping his finger and saying it doesn't matter what you do. [00:50:08]

Through the sanctification by the Spirit. So if he had just said through the Holy Spirit it would have sounded like Ephesians but now he says more specifically, how are we kept and saved and sealed for that last inheritance? It is through the sanctification of the Spirit. [00:58:48]

Paul is praying, bows his knees, and prays to the Father from whom the whole family in heaven on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit. All right, we need to be strengthened now for what? [01:03:20]

The Holy Spirit is the strengthener in his prayer for what? So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith and that you being rooted and grounded in love may have strength to comprehend with all the saints the breadth and length and height and depth. [01:07:36]

And to know the love of Christ it's the strength to know the love of Christ. This is it, this is the key to sanctification. Only by the Spirit do we have strength to comprehend the breadth and length and height and depth and to know the love of Christ for us. [01:11:24]

Many people are not truly born again because they don't have any sense of the breadth and length and height and depth of being loved by Christ. It doesn't make them happy in the morning, it doesn't make them happy at night, it doesn't touch them at noon. [01:14:48]

The Holy Spirit is committed not only to revealing to us and causing us to experience the love of Christ but to be built up together. Building up is the work of the Spirit and there's a third way he sanctifies us, namely by creating unity, the unity of the Spirit. [01:21:52]

The Spirit gives us a sense of the love of Christ, the Spirit builds us up and enables us to build each other up, builds up the body and the Spirit gives unity. Now, what is it about the sins that were mentioned just before verse 30? [01:26:40]

Why do these four lying to each other, holding grudges against each other, stealing from each other and speaking down rather than building up each other grieve the Holy Spirit? Because all of them contradict the sense of being loved by Christ. [01:31:20]
