The psalmist reminds us that the story of our lives is moving toward a certain end: we will all stand before God, who is both mighty and just. This reality can feel intimidating, especially when we reflect on our own mistakes and shortcomings. Yet, God’s judgment is not the end of the story for His people. He wants us to live each day with the end in mind, not out of fear, but with the assurance that, because of Christ, judgment is not something to dread. Instead, it is a call to live as His beloved children, secure in His grace and mercy. [46:35]
Psalm 50:1-6 (ESV)
The Mighty One, God the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth. Our God comes; he does not keep silence; before him is a devouring fire, around him a mighty tempest. He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that he may judge his people: “Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!” The heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge! Selah
Reflection: When you think about standing before God one day, what feelings arise in you? How might remembering both His justice and His grace change the way you live today?
God’s people often fall into the trap of thinking that if they do the right things, God will respond in the way they want—treating Him like a vending machine. But God makes it clear: He does not need our sacrifices or our good deeds to be complete. Instead, He desires a heart of gratitude, a life lived in thanksgiving for all He has already done. Our acts of worship and service are not to earn His favor, but to respond to His love and faithfulness. [51:41]
Psalm 50:7-15 (ESV)
“Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, I will testify against you. I am God, your God. Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you; your burnt offerings are continually before me. I will not accept a bull from your house or goats from your folds. For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine. If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine. Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats? Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High, and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”
Reflection: In what ways have you tried to “earn” God’s favor or blessings? How can you shift your focus today to simply offering Him thanks for what He’s already done?
We live in a world that constantly pushes us to do more, achieve more, and earn more. But God calls us to a different way: to work from a place of rest, knowing that Jesus has already accomplished everything needed for our salvation. True rest is found at the foot of the cross, where we bring our busyness, anxiety, and shame, and receive His grace. God wants us to plan for rest, to make space for His Word, and to live each day as His beloved children, not as people striving to prove ourselves. [01:05:32]
Matthew 11:28-30 (ESV)
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Reflection: What is one practical way you can intentionally plan for rest in God’s presence this week, rather than waiting for your schedule to clear up?
God is not an “if-then” God who loves us only if we do the right things. He is a “because-then” God: because Jesus has lived, died, and risen for us, we are already loved, already forgiven, already His. Our identity as children of God is secure, not because of our performance, but because of His grace. This truth frees us from the endless cycle of trying to earn love and allows us to live each day in the joy and security of being wanted and chosen by God. [01:10:49]
Romans 8:1-2, 15-17 (ESV)
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death... For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Reflection: Where in your life are you still trying to prove your worth to God or others? How can you remind yourself today that you are already fully loved and accepted in Christ?
Because God has done everything to save us, our lives are now meant to be lived as a sacrifice of thanksgiving. This means bringing our hurts, our busyness, our celebrations, and our prayers to Him, trusting that He hears and delivers us. It means gathering with God’s people, resting in His Word, and letting our lives reflect His goodness to the world. Even in a busy and broken world, we are called to live differently—resting in Christ, giving thanks, and sharing His love with others. [01:08:38]
Hebrews 13:15-16 (ESV)
Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
Reflection: Who is one person you can encourage or serve today as an act of thanksgiving to God for all He has done for you?
Today, we gathered to remember the heart of our faith: that we are loved, chosen, and redeemed by a God who is not an “if-then” God, but a “because-then” God. We began by confessing the ancient Nicene Creed, joining with the great cloud of witnesses across time and space, affirming that we belong to a family much larger than ourselves. This belonging is not based on our performance, but on the finished work of Christ. We are reminded that God’s love and grace are the foundation of our identity and our hope.
Reflecting on Psalm 50, we considered the sobering reality that our lives are moving toward an ultimate ending—standing before God, who is both Judge and Redeemer. The psalm begins with the majesty and power of God, but quickly moves to the uncomfortable truth of judgment. Yet, God’s desire is not for empty ritual or transactional religion. He does not need our sacrifices; He wants our hearts, our thanksgiving, and our trust. Too often, we fall into the trap of thinking that if we do the right things, God will bless us, as if He were a vending machine. But God owns everything already; He wants us to live in response to His grace, not in an anxious attempt to earn His favor.
We live in a world that constantly pushes us to be busy, to earn, to achieve, and to prove ourselves. Even in the church, we can get caught up in the cycle of “after I get past this, then I’ll rest.” But Jesus is the only one who truly finished the work and then rested—after the cross, He declared victory over sin, death, and all our striving. Because of what Christ has done, we are invited to live from rest, not for rest. Our lives become a sacrifice of thanksgiving, not a desperate attempt to tip the scales in our favor.
This is the freedom of the gospel: God does not need us, but He wants us. He has done everything to make us His own. We are called to bring our busyness, our shame, our fear, and our striving to the foot of the cross, and to receive again the grace that is already ours in Christ. From this place of rest, we are sent out to love, to serve, and to share the good news—not because we have to, but because we are already loved.

``He gave it all for you and he suffered and he died and he rose from the grave and he proclaims victory over your sin and your sickness and your darkness and your shame and he proclaims victory over your schedule and every syllabus that you're going to get he proclaims victory over it and he says i've done it and you don't have to live like that anymore there's nothing you have to earn from me i am not an if then god i am a because then god [01:04:16] (33 seconds) #GatherInRest
He says to you because i sent my son for you and he did everything to save you and you've been baptized in christ you've been buried in the water and you've been raised to new life and you have a new name as child of god because of that gift i want you to live for me and i want you to do it working from rest [01:04:49] (24 seconds) #RootedInGodsLove
Start with the fact that God says, I love you. I don't need you. I want you. And so I've done everything to make you mine and you are His. And so stop and take a deep breath and get into the Word. Rest every day here and let Him remind you how much He loves you. Rest with your family of God. Come here and bring all that busyness to the cross and trust Him. And rest in letting other people know about His love. Live for this God who lived for you. Live your life as a sacrifice of thanksgiving and bring your hurts to Him. [01:08:08] (52 seconds) #RestInHisGrace
Because you're His child, because you are His, He says, Call on Me in the day of trouble and I will deliver you and you shall glorify Me. Now He's not always going to deliver you the way you want, but He is going to deliver you from sin and sickness and shame and grief and He's going to give you eternity. And so, the end of the story is us forever with our God in new bodies, in a new creation that's going to be awesome. So I can get through today. I can deal with today. But I can also move by the Holy Spirit and learn to work from rest even in this broken world. [01:09:03] (41 seconds) #GoOutFromRest
Because you're a child of God. And you don't have to do all these things for Him to love you. He already does. God loves you. He's done everything to save you. And the end of the story, however the between here and there goes, is you with Him in perfection. Us celebrating together. We're going to still work in eternity, but it's going to be awesome. So let's get to work resting in Christ and living for Him. [01:10:21] (37 seconds)
Our God is good and He loves us and He says to you today, I know you've been too busy. I know you've been overwhelmed. I want you to start today where you should start every day, at the foot of the cross. I want you to bring that busyness to Me. I want you to bring the overwhelmed feelings to Me. I want you to bring the anxiety to Me. I want you to bring your sin and your darkness and your shame to Me. I want you to bring your fear of death to Me. I want you to bring your fear of judgment to Me. I want you to bring it all to Me right here at the cross and lay it at the cross and God is going to give you grace again today. Not because He needs to. Not because you're doing great things, but because He loves you. And Jesus has already done everything to save you. [01:11:01] (51 seconds)
