Living in God's Love: Proclaiming and Forgiving

Summary

### Summary

Today, we gathered to partake in communion, reflecting on the profound sacrifice of Jesus Christ. As we remember His body broken and His blood shed for us, we are reminded of our role in proclaiming His death, resurrection, and the salvation He offers. This proclamation is not just through words but through our lives, demonstrating His sufficiency and provision in our struggles and victories.

We delved into 1 Corinthians 2:9-12, emphasizing the importance of understanding the things freely given to us by God through His Spirit. This understanding is crucial for living a life that is not just about survival but thriving in the fullness of what God has prepared for us. We are called to live impactful lives, not by our own abilities but through the love of God within us.

The deepest part of God is love. This love is not about miraculous signs or supernatural experiences but about knowing Him intimately. If we feel condemned or unworthy, it indicates that we do not yet fully know His love. To know God more, we must spend time with Him, not just through structured study but through genuine, heartfelt communion.

Galatians 5:22-23 teaches us that the fruit of the Spirit begins with love, which then leads to joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Perfect love casts out fear, including the fear of not measuring up. Even if we have made significant mistakes, God’s love restores us to His perfect plan, not a second-best version.

We also discussed the practical application of love, especially towards those who have wronged us. Romans 5:8 reminds us that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. This ultimate act of love sets the standard for how we should love others, even those who seem unlovable. Forgiveness is a crucial aspect of this love, as illustrated by a personal testimony of forgiving someone who had caused deep hurt.

In conclusion, the only way to truly love others is to experience and understand God’s love for us. This love transforms our hearts, enabling us to extend grace and compassion even to those who have wronged us. As we grow in this love, we fulfill our calling to live lives that reflect the heart of God.

### Bible Reading
1. 1 Corinthians 2:9-12: "But, as it is written, 'What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him'—these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God."
2. Galatians 5:22-23: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law."
3. Romans 5:8: "But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Day 1: Living Out the Proclamation of Christ’s Death and Resurrection
Our role in communion is to proclaim Jesus' death and resurrection, not just through words but through our lives. This involves acknowledging His sufficiency and provision in our struggles and victories, thereby demonstrating His power and love to others. When we partake in communion, we are reminded of the profound sacrifice of Jesus Christ. His body was broken, and His blood was shed for us, and in remembering this, we are called to live lives that reflect this truth. This proclamation is not merely a verbal declaration but a lifestyle that showcases His sufficiency in our daily struggles and victories. By living out this proclamation, we demonstrate to the world the transformative power of His love and grace. [40:58]

1 Corinthians 11:26 (ESV): "For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes."

Reflection: How can you demonstrate the sufficiency and provision of Christ in your current struggles and victories today?

Day 2: Understanding God’s Gifts Through the Spirit
1 Corinthians 2:9-12 emphasizes the importance of understanding the things freely given to us by God through His Spirit. This understanding is crucial for living a life that thrives in the fullness of what God has prepared for us, impacting the world through His love. The Spirit reveals to us the deep things of God, enabling us to grasp the magnitude of His gifts. This spiritual insight is not just for our benefit but equips us to live impactful lives that reflect His love and wisdom to the world. By embracing and understanding these gifts, we can navigate life with a sense of purpose and divine direction. [52:32]

1 Corinthians 2:10-12 (ESV): "These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit.

Reflection: What is one gift from God that you have not fully understood or utilized? How can you seek the Spirit’s guidance to understand and use this gift today?

Day 3: The Deepest Part of God is Love
The deepest part of God is not found in miraculous signs or supernatural experiences but in His love. If we feel condemned or unworthy, it indicates that we do not yet fully know His love. To know God more, we must spend genuine, heartfelt time with Him. This intimate knowledge of God’s love transforms our perception of ourselves and our relationship with Him. It is through this deep, personal communion with God that we begin to understand the true nature of His love, which is unconditional and restorative. [01:01:18]

1 John 4:16 (ESV): "So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him."

Reflection: How can you create more genuine, heartfelt time with God this week to deepen your understanding of His love?

Day 4: Perfect Love Casts Out Fear
Galatians 5:22-23 teaches that the fruit of the Spirit begins with love, which leads to other virtues. Perfect love casts out fear, including the fear of not measuring up. Even if we have made significant mistakes, God’s love restores us to His perfect plan. This love is transformative, enabling us to live without the fear of failure or inadequacy. By embracing God’s perfect love, we can experience true freedom and peace, knowing that His love is sufficient to cover all our shortcomings and guide us back to His perfect plan for our lives. [01:07:50]

1 John 4:18 (ESV): "There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love."

Reflection: What fear is holding you back from fully embracing God’s love? How can you allow His perfect love to cast out that fear today?

Day 5: Forgiving and Loving the Unlovable
Romans 5:8 reminds us that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. This ultimate act of love sets the standard for how we should love others, even those who seem unlovable. Forgiveness is a crucial aspect of this love, transforming our hearts to extend grace and compassion. By reflecting on Christ’s sacrificial love, we are called to forgive those who have wronged us, recognizing that we too have been forgiven. This act of forgiveness not only frees us but also reflects the heart of God to those around us. [01:19:26]

Colossians 3:13 (ESV): "Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive."

Reflection: Think of someone in your life you need to forgive. Can you ask God to help you begin to extend His love and forgiveness to them today?

1. "We don't proclaim our insufficiency, we proclaim his sufficiency, his ability, his provision, his blessing. Now we can pray for each other and you can share hey I need prayer for this but one way that you can proclaim his death proclaim his salvation to us is hey I'm struggling with this but God has provided me with this and he has provided say it with your own mouth saying hey you know can you pray for me you can stand with me it's good to stand with one another and pray for one another but in your in the moment you can say hey I'm struggling with XYZ but here's what the Lord's done for me I know I proclaim I speak it out here's the answer to this situation." God loved me in such a way that I have no other choice but to love you God loved me so deeply that if I act in any other way than love towards you the Bible says 1 John says if you say you love God but you don't love your brother you're a liar this is hard stuff but it's true that love doesn't just stop in me that love has to flow through me to you to others to whoever I meet to whoever I meet to whomever I'm not going to go into all of that they said to Jesus who do we need to love? who do we need to walk in love with? and he said your neighbor oh who's my neighbor? and you know that parable parable of the good Samaritan sworn enemies took care of each other just cutting right to the chase sworn hatreds generational hatreds took care of each other and I'm even going to throw out for no extra charge this morning at the end I'm going to throw out how you can know if you're in love if you're walking in love with an individual but not right now because I want you to pay attention for the rest of the service otherwise you can just go have coffee because we're not done yet we're not there yet how? how do we love how do we love people that are unlovable unlovable did I say lovable? lovable." 10. "How did God love us? God loved us so much that he gave his son to die on that cross horribly for each of us and it says right here he didn't wait until we were perfect okay now you're now I love you no it says when we were at our worst while we were still sinners Christ chose to die for us one of the ways one of the ways that you can you can tell if you're walking in love towards somebody and it's very very quick very quick indicator is if that person who let's just take a let's just do a little exercise here think of the worst person you know think of that person who has hurt you the worst think of that person who's cheated you stolen from you lied to you spoke evil about you stabbed you in the back if they needed help would you serve them now if you're being honest I'm glad nobody's shaking your head man thank you thank you thank you because that's hard it's like it's really really hard and I know and this testimony this story just came up and I know many of you could probably tell you've heard it over the years but when I came back to the Lord when I came back to him I grew up in a Christian home I grew up I got saved when I was four years old and I lived as the as a Christian home you know as a believer I loved God you know did all the stuff all the right stuff went to church went to youth group blah blah blah blah I was the Christian kid in school you know all of that kind of stuff and then I went to college and college has a way of testing you to see what you're really made of so a lot of it was head knowledge there wasn't a lot of heart knowledge and while I was there I started hanging out with the wrong crowd let's just call it that the wrong crowd and the wrong crowd took me deeper and deeper into sin now they didn't take me there I chose it was my choice by the end of that by the end of college well by the end of college yeah by the time the college kicked me out of school for not showing up for classes I was as deep as you would ever more deep than I thought I would ever go into sin and one of the guys that I grew up with in grade school junior high high school from our neighborhood lived a couple miles from me he went to the same school and he saw in that he saw who I was becoming and he went back to my hometown and told everybody including my dad told him details it broke my dad's heart I still remember the day that I think he must have heard because everything changed and I was like what just happened somebody told me oh I'll call him now I have to make sure Dave is there any Daves here no Daves okay well to protect him I'm going to change his name Dave Dave had been telling everybody that I was doing XYZ and my parents found out and I immediately hated him I mean I hated him and I was in a frame of mind at that point that I hated him so much that I would have killed him I know that sounds like a lot that sounds excessive but that's sin that's the wages of sin is death and you hate somebody long enough Jesus said that's the same as murder whether you do it or don't do it it's murder it's death and I hated him one day I was at a basketball game high school basketball game and I'm sitting in my seat with some other friends a bunch of other friends and I hated him and I hear a noise behind me and I turn around and it's Dave and Dave goes oh hey John how you doing and I stood up and I turned around and I put my finger in his chest I said if I ever see you again I'll kill you I meant it I hated him I hated him years go by years go by Lord has mercy on me oh Jesus praise God for his mercy praise God for his mercy praise God for his goodness for his love towards us for his love towards me and I'm just now I'm trying to sort this out and walking it through and I still remember it was James Dobson this is James Dobson on Focus on the Family it was on KTIS I'm driving to work and I'm listening to James Dobson and he says this he goes if you can't forgive people God can't forgive you that's scripture that's not my opinion that's not he Jesus said it he says if you don't forgive others I can't forgive you and immediately Dave came into my into my mind it's just immediately and as soon as as immediately he came into my mind I was filled with rage again I was just I hated that guy I just hated him and I went no way no way you're not talking about him and God said if you can't forgive Dave I can't forgive you just mess me up for a whole day I just messed me up I'm like no way not him okay there's other people that aren't quite as annoying not him and I went through the whole day and the Holy Spirit did not let up on me you need to forgive him so I'm on my way home that night and I'm driving and I'm just I'm praying I'm like Lord come on I can't do that I just can't I don't have it in me and the Holy Spirit said I know you don't have it in you give it to me I went okay because here's the deal I'm not gonna I don't play games with God I don't I don't you know look God this is what I'm doing and I've got something else behind my look look over here I'm not gonna I'm not gonna okay I forgive Dave because he knows my heart I mean there's no you can't fake that one you can't fake any of it so I'm like okay Lord here's the deal I can't forgive him I don't have it but I'm gonna give you the your Lord I give this to you I don't have it in me I don't know how you're gonna do it it'll be a miracle it'll be a miracle Lord I I don't know how but I'm gonna give it to you I trust you Lord you take it and I just went on with the rest of my day and that conviction ended it was like it was gone it was done the Lord just wanted me to come to a point where I just okay Lord I give him to you I give this whole situation to you months passed months and months and months and if I ever heard his name I would I would just instantly be just filled with with rage and one day I was I was at my parents house and my mom mentioned him and for the very first time my first thought was I should be mad and the second thought was I'm not mad why am I not angry I was like that's weird it was the first time in all those years that I didn't just immediately boil with rage when I thought of him I was like wow that's something that's different okay that's different how can I love him because God showed me to love him because while I was still a sinner he forgave me and he loved me so I thought wow that is really interesting so I go on and you know months go by again and I was somewhere else and all of a sudden I thought about him I just it just hit you know that thought came back into my mind and I was like okay that's just really weird not only was I not mad I was actually a little concerned about him like I cared about him I was like okay what I don't get this because I didn't do anything I didn't study you know verses daily to forgive Dave I didn't I didn't you know I didn't confess over and over I like Dave I like Dave or at least you know I don't hate him as much as I used to or you know I didn't it wasn't something you worked up it wasn't it wasn't something I had to work up it was just it was literally points in time where huh I didn't get angry huh not only am I not angry but it's like I kind of care about him months go by months go by and I'm at my parents house again we were living up here but we were down visiting Saturday morning I always got up whenever I get up I have to I have to drink coffee and eat that's my those are the two things I must do as soon as my feet hit the floor don't get in my way I have to drink coffee and eat okay so I got up and my folks always had food so I was going to go in the kitchen I was going to make some breakfast and as I'm walking into the kitchen the Holy Spirit said something he had never said to me ever before he said go up to well the town I'm from is Hollandale anybody know where Hollandale is it's a big metropolis it's amazing middle of nowhere it's in the middle he says go up to Hollandale and have breakfast at the cafe I had never been to the cafe and I had never had breakfast but I knew it was the Holy Spirit go up to the cafe and have breakfast this morning I was like that's weird okay because I know the Holy Spirit I know his voice okay I'll go so I get in the car I drive up and I'm about halfway to Hollandale and the Holy Spirit speaks to me and he says Dave's going to be there when you get there and I not only wasn't angry hated I not only huh interesting I actually kind of care when he said that it was like I was overwhelmed with love and it was like okay this is weird this is this is this is not something that just happens I was like this is this is really really odd okay I actually kind of looked forward to seeing him so I drive up I pull in the cafe in Hollandale was about that big with booths on each side and the kitchen in the back I mean it's very tiny and I walk in and I look all the way through the room and Dave's not there Dave's not there long story Dave's not there I went oh that must have been must have been the pizza from last night and I went and I went and sat down ordered my breakfast had my coffee they brought my food and about the time I was getting into the meal all of a sudden I hear ding-a-ling-a-ling-a-ling somebody walked through the front door and it was Dave and when he walked in the front door compassion compassion I mean it wasn't there was no there was no no thought of anger there was no thought of of angst there was no thought of of hatred there was I mean and it wasn't even just I was putting up with him it's like compassion just started flowing out of me I'm like oh my gosh I can't even I'm having trouble finishing the rest of my breakfast he walks in doesn't see me went over to the other side and sat down and just all of a sudden it's like all I could do to not run over and start talking start you know and you definitely don't run over and start hugging him I mean you know I mean the last thing I said to him was you know and it's just and all of a sudden now I'm getting scared it's like okay this is weird what am I going to say what am I going to do and the Holy Spirit says just go over take your coffee go over and talk to him can do that so I stood up and I walked over and I sat down in the booth remember what I told him years before just so you know and I looked at him and I said hey man
