Living in Anticipation: Embracing Faith Amidst Persecution

Summary

In our exploration of 2 Timothy, we have been focusing on the essence of living in anticipation of Christ's return rather than getting entangled in the specifics of end-time prophecies. The scriptures consistently emphasize the importance of readiness and the quality of our lives in light of the inevitable return of Christ. Paul, in his letter to Timothy, underscores the reality that those who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will face persecution. This is not a possibility but a certainty for those who are earnest in their faith. The world will continue to grow darker, and evil will progress from bad to worse, but the call for believers is to remain steadfast and live according to the teachings of Christ.

Paul's exhortation to Timothy is a reminder that our lives should reflect the teachings we have received, especially from those who have been genuine in their faith. Timothy's faith was nurtured by his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice, illustrating the profound impact of a godly heritage. This passage challenges us to consider the legacy we are building and the example we are setting for future generations. It is a call to live authentically, allowing the scriptures to guide and transform us.

The power of scripture is central to our faith journey. The Bible is not just a historical document but the living word of God, capable of teaching, reproving, correcting, and training us in righteousness. It equips us for every good work, enabling us to fulfill the purpose God has for our lives. The story of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16 serves as a stark reminder of the sufficiency and authority of God's word. Even a miracle like someone rising from the dead would not convince those who reject the scriptures. Therefore, we must trust in the transformative power of God's word and allow it to shape our lives and actions.

Day 1: Living in Anticipation of Christ's Return
Living in anticipation of Christ's return is not about deciphering the specifics of end-time prophecies but about embodying readiness and longing for His return in our daily lives. The scriptures guide us to focus on the quality of our lives, ensuring that our actions and thoughts reflect our hope in Christ's return. This anticipation should be evident in how we conduct ourselves, making sure that our lives are a testament to our faith and hope in Jesus. By living in this way, we prepare ourselves for His return, not by fear or anxiety, but by a steadfast commitment to His teachings. [00:47]

"For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, 'There is peace and security,' then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape." (1 Thessalonians 5:2-3, ESV)

Reflection: How can you demonstrate your anticipation of Christ's return in your daily actions and decisions today?

Day 2: Embracing Persecution as a Mark of Genuine Faith
Persecution is an inevitable part of living a godly life in Christ Jesus. It is not merely a possibility but a certainty for those who earnestly follow Christ's teachings. This reality calls for believers to be prepared to face opposition and challenges as they stand for the truth. Embracing persecution as a mark of genuine faith means understanding that it is a testament to one's commitment to Christ. It is through these trials that faith is tested and strengthened, allowing believers to grow deeper in their relationship with God. [03:31]

"Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived." (2 Timothy 3:12-13, ESV)

Reflection: In what ways can you prepare yourself spiritually and emotionally to face opposition for your faith today?

Day 3: Building a Legacy of Faith
The legacy of faith is powerful, as seen in Timothy's life, which was shaped by his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice. This highlights the importance of passing down a genuine faith to future generations. Our lives should be a testament to the truth we profess, setting an example for those who come after us. Building a legacy of faith involves living authentically and allowing the scriptures to guide and transform us. It challenges us to consider the impact of our faith on others and the example we are setting for future generations. [09:09]

"I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well." (2 Timothy 1:5, ESV)

Reflection: What steps can you take today to ensure that your faith is being passed down to the next generation in a meaningful way?

Day 4: Trusting in the Sufficiency and Authority of Scripture
The scriptures are sufficient and authoritative, being God-breathed and equipping us for every good work. They are not just historical documents but the living word of God, capable of teaching, reproving, correcting, and training us in righteousness. Trusting in the power of God's word means allowing it to transform our lives and guide us in fulfilling the purpose God has for us. The story of the rich man and Lazarus serves as a reminder of the sufficiency and authority of God's word, emphasizing the need to rely on the scriptures for salvation and truth. [27:14]

"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17, ESV)

Reflection: How can you incorporate the teachings of scripture into your daily routine to ensure it guides your actions and decisions?

Day 5: Relying on Scripture for Salvation and Truth
The story of the rich man and Lazarus illustrates the sufficiency of scripture, showing that even miraculous signs cannot replace the authority and power of God's word. This narrative emphasizes the importance of relying on the scriptures to lead us to salvation and truth. It challenges believers to trust in the transformative power of God's word, allowing it to shape their lives and actions. By doing so, we acknowledge the authority of scripture and its role in guiding us toward a deeper understanding of God's will and purpose for our lives. [24:00]

"But Abraham said, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' He said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.'" (Luke 16:29-31, ESV)

Reflection: In what ways can you deepen your reliance on scripture to guide you in truth and lead you to a more profound understanding of salvation today?

Quotes

The purpose is the same it's always about how are you going to live because this is going to happen and sometimes we get caught up in the details of how this is going to happen when's it going to happen what does this represent what is that and that's fine to study those things but again the purpose if you read those passages they're all there to say are you ready for this are you are you ready for the end are you longing for his return and are you ready for his return. [00:49:33]

Indeed all who desire to live a Godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted while evil people and imposters Will Go On from bad to worse deceiving and being deceived so he makes it clear he goes in the end he he tells Timothy he goes look everyone who wants to live a Godly life in Christ will be persecuted remember last week we talked about that Paul and his persecutions and Paul's saying look yeah I went through all this garbage but don't think that you know that was me and I'm this unique individual. [00:54:40]

All who desire to live a Godly life in Christ Jesus will it's not might will be persecuted that means if you're serious about really wanting to live for Jesus he goes persecution isn't an option not for someone who's seriously going to follow Jesus Christ he goes I promise you you will be persecuted if that's your desire if you speak up for what you believe you will be P that mean where you live doesn't matter where you live you'll be persecuted if you're going to live the life that God wants you to live stand for the morals that God wants you to stand for live The Godly life in Christ Jesus you will be persecuted. [00:58:00]

But as for you he goes I want you to live according to this book and according to the leading of the Holy Spirit and uh and it says there in verse 14 but as for you continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you've been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus he says Timothy it doesn't matter how everyone else lives even the majority of the church people go to church are going to live a certain way. [01:12:40]

I love I love that they put those two women in the Bible you know that that that you know when he goes hey you you know you you know this book and you know people who were real and people who are real taught it to you and he goes I saw it in your mom and I saw it and your grandma I I just want to point that out because we live in a time when people belittle the role of a woman people belittle the role of a mother and say well if you're going to be something then you need to go out and get your career and this and that and whatever you know whatever that's fine but this whole issue of being a mom needs to be priority this issue of discipling your children needs to be a priority. [01:33:36]

You don't read about Eunice and Lois doing these massive Crusades and leading a ton of people to the Lord but you read about them building into this young man's life and Paul says you know what you've got a responsibility ility now because you were taught by some Godly women okay you know the way your mom lived she was the real thing you know the way she lived she was the real thing she taught you the scriptures and you saw the way your grandma lived and that consistent faithfulness through those years I mean don't you want to be a person like that where you read about this and it's like okay continue what you've learned and firmly knowing from whom you learned it. [01:39:44]

The Bible says is that the power is literally in these very words that just by reading these words that's what changes a person's life and there's a real interesting passage very very interesting passage I want you to look at it's in Luke chapter 16 Luke chapter 16 it's it's the story of uh Lazarus and the rich man okay a fascinating passage honestly for me it's one of the scariest passages in scripture um but I want I want us to look at it Luke chapter 16 because I want to point something out to you this is so so major in understanding what we have and what we hold in our hands and the power in this book. [01:54:00]

If they reject God's word it doesn't matter if someone rises from the dead they still won't believe him he puts the very words of God on par with seeing a miracle of someone Dead coming back to life and he says this is just as powerful and so if they reject this it shows where their heart is and it would make no difference if they saw a miracle see do you understand the power the power of these words see see some of you think well maybe I'd believe you friends if you did a miracle no you wouldn't if you don't believe the words of God you don't believe the words of God. [02:24:44]

All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching for Repro for correction and for training in righteousness that the man of God may be competent equipped to every good work so so he see he says all scripture is breathed out by God it's this idea of it's like coming out of the mouth of God like you actually hearing the very voice of God he goes all these words that's what that's what you holding your hand right now all the scripture is God breathed and and I think sometimes we put you know the wrong emphasis on the thought of maybe hearing the voice of God. [02:41:39]

The Bible says that all scripture is God breathed there has to be something in you that doesn't quite believe this verse that you would wake up at 5 to hear an audible voice but you're not waking up at 5 to read his his voice from this book do you really believe it's God breathe and it's just as important as hearing from him he says that's what these words are they're alive there's something real about them and you can hear from him every time you open this book it's like God breathing these words out to you and he says it's breathed out for God it's profitable for teaching for teaching that's why we teach out of this book every week. [02:52:23]

It's not just about knowing this book it's knowing this book so that we can go out and actually do something with our lives and this is where there are Bible teaching churches everywhere there are a lot of those but so often you have these people who know and I don't ever want to become this a church that know so much and we quote this verse this verse this verse they great that's a wonderful thing but has it led you to action has it led you to the good works that that this is supposed to lead you to a seminaries are filled with students and professors who really know how to you know point out this and that about the book but the question is did it change your life did it actually equip you to do something or just to sit and have more discussions over this book is to equip you for every good work. [03:16:57]

The Bible explains that you and I were created for a purpose that there were good works that God determined beforehand before you even born there were things for you to do on this Earth and what this book does is it equips you to go out and do those things in a way that honors God and uh I I just I don't know how to emphasize strong enough how powerful this book is that you have in your hands and how this is all you need for this whole thing you know that you can be competent and equipped for every good work see some of you in this room you think well I need this this this I need a degree I need a you know I need all these different things I don't have it I can have no in no the Bible says this is all you need if you got this and you study this then you need to believe in the power of this book that you are competent and equipped for every good work.
