Living in Abundance: Ruling, Resting, and Relationships
Devotional
Day 1: Empowered to Rule Over Sin
In Genesis, God commands Adam and Eve to rule over creation, a mandate that extends to us spiritually. Through Christ, we are empowered to rule over sin and destructive thought patterns, reflecting God's image in our lives. This empowerment is foundational for living a victorious Christian life, as it aligns us with God's original intention for humanity. By embracing this mindset, we can overcome negative influences and live in the freedom and authority granted to us through Christ. [06:05]
"For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace." (Romans 6:14, ESV)
Reflection: Identify a recurring negative thought pattern in your life. How can you actively use the authority given to you in Christ to overcome it today?
Day 2: Redefining Success Through God's Promises
Our work, like Adam's task of cultivating the Garden, should not define our worth or success. While diligence in our tasks is important, we must not let work consume us. Our true identity and success are found in ruling over sin and living in the abundance of God's promises. The Garden of Eden, filled with an abundance of trees, symbolizes the vast promises of God available to us. By focusing on these promises rather than being preoccupied with the few commands, we can live in the abundance of God's love and grace. [14:00]
"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ." (Colossians 3:23-24, ESV)
Reflection: Consider your current work or responsibilities. How can you shift your perspective to see them as opportunities to serve God rather than measures of your worth?
Day 3: Living in the Abundance of God's Promises
The Garden of Eden is a symbol of the vast promises of God available to us. We are encouraged to focus on these promises rather than being preoccupied with the few commands. This perspective helps us live in the abundance of God's love and grace, allowing us to experience the fullness of life He intends for us. By embracing God's promises, we can navigate life's challenges with hope and assurance, knowing that His provision is always sufficient. [18:19]
"His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence." (2 Peter 1:3, ESV)
Reflection: Reflect on a promise from God that you have seen fulfilled in your life. How can this encourage you to trust in His promises for your current circumstances?
Day 4: Unity in Relationships
In relationships, especially in marriage, we are to see our spouses as bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh, fostering unity and harmony. This extends to our relationships within the body of Christ, where we are called to support and build each other up, recognizing our spiritual connection. By embracing this unity, we can create a community that reflects God's love and grace, strengthening our bonds and encouraging one another in our spiritual journeys. [24:52]
"Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing." (1 Thessalonians 5:11, ESV)
Reflection: Think of a relationship in your life that needs strengthening. What practical steps can you take today to foster unity and support in that relationship?
Day 5: Resting in God's Love
Before striving to obey commands, we must first rest in God's love. This rest is foundational, allowing us to live from a place of security and assurance in His promises. By resting in His love, we can approach life's challenges with peace and confidence, knowing that we are deeply loved and cared for by our Creator. This rest empowers us to live a life of obedience and faithfulness, rooted in the knowledge of God's unwavering love for us. [31:02]
"For thus said the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel, 'In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.'" (Isaiah 30:15, ESV)
Reflection: Set aside time today to rest in God's presence. How can this intentional rest help you approach your daily tasks with a renewed sense of peace and assurance?
Sermon Summary
In Genesis chapters 1 and 2, we find the profound truth of how God created Adam and Eve in innocence, declaring His creation as "very good." This narrative is not just a historical account but a spiritual blueprint for our lives in Christ. We began our journey in sin, but through Christ, we are offered a new life, akin to being in the Garden of Eden. Spiritually, we are transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light, seated with Christ in heavenly places. This transformation calls us to live with a mindset of ruling over sin, as God originally intended for humanity.
The first command God gave to Adam and Eve was to rule and subdue the earth. This command extends to us spiritually, urging us to rule over sin and destructive thought patterns. We are created in God's image, and through Christ, we are empowered to rule over every negative influence. This mindset is crucial for living a victorious Christian life.
Moreover, our work, like Adam's task of cultivating the Garden, should not define our worth or success. We are to work diligently but not let it consume us. Our identity and success are found in ruling over sin and living in the abundance of God's promises. The Garden of Eden was filled with an abundance of trees, symbolizing the vast promises of God available to us. We must focus on these promises rather than being preoccupied with the few commands.
In relationships, especially in marriage, we are to see our spouses as bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh, fostering unity and harmony. This extends to our relationships within the body of Christ, where we are to support and build each other up, recognizing our spiritual connection.
Finally, God invites us to rest in His love, just as He rested on the seventh day. Before we strive to obey commands, we must first rest in His love and let His promises fill our hearts. This is the life God calls us to—a life of ruling, working with perspective, embracing His promises, fostering unity, and resting in His love.

Sermon Clips
In Christ, we are just like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. God has us in Christ in the kingdom of heaven on earth. God says in Colossians chapter 1 through the Holy Spirit, Paul says that God transferred us from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light. [00:01:20]
The moment you're born again, the moment God transfers us from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light, God says, "I'm gonna make you in my image because I'm going to put you in Christ, who's in the image of God," and He's going to give me a command which says, "Rule now." [00:05:58]
We ought to live with the mentality that we are rulers, not rulers over people, but rulers over all of sin. That has to be our very identity, that when we are born again, God has given us the first command, which is now rule. [00:06:52]
The message, whatever we call victory over sin or ruling over all the sin, is from the very beginning. God created us in His image, and when we are birthed in Christ, we are created in His image to rule. [00:08:07]
Our work should not define our worth or success. Like Adam's task of cultivating the Garden, we are to work diligently but not let it consume us. Our identity is found in ruling over sin and living in the abundance of God's promises. [00:14:00]
God gave Adam and Eve an abundance to eat from and one commandment of what not to eat. Similarly, in the New Covenant, have we seen our life as an abundance of promises compared to some commands? [00:18:08]
Spiritually, I must see that we are off the same bones, about the same flesh, just come out of me, my own body. As we heard in the conference last week, lives in beautiful harmony. You don't see the hand constantly slapping the leg and slapping the head. [00:25:23]
This extends even for those of us, for every one of us in the kingdom of light, as it relates to brother and sister and brothers with each other, sisters with each other, to see the members of the body of Christ that God has placed me with and look at them spiritually. [00:26:49]
God asked us to have the first day after He told us all of this. He created man and woman and created those things. He said, "Now just rest." How long did it take to make all the stars? I think He took just a day. [00:30:15]
Before you seek to obey all the commands, rest in my love. Let me sing over you all my promises. Let me tell you the plans I have for you. That's where we start. [00:31:09]
Seek to be united. The Garden of Eden is not good. It's not good to be alone. It's not good to rule over sin in your private life, to have a healthy perspective of work, and to obey all the commands and enjoy the promises if you're alone. [00:32:37]
This is the life God calls us to—a life of ruling, working with perspective, embracing His promises, fostering unity, and resting in His love. [00:33:34]
