Like modern people, they assumed eternity would operate by familiar rules—but God’s power reshapes existence itself. Our grief and hopes often cling to what we know, yet Scripture points to a reality where every broken thing is made wholly new. To settle for a diminished view of eternity is to miss the radical hope Jesus offers. [02:53]

Matthew brings Jesus into another trap in the last week before the cross, and the Sadducees come with a question meant to make the resurrection look absurd. The Sadducees do not believe in resurrection at all, physical or spiritual, so eternity is basically nothing to them. The trap uses the old command from Deuteronomy about a brother marrying a widow to raise up offspring, and it pushes the situation to the extreme: seven brothers, one woman, no children, and then the question, “Whose wife will she be?” The question assumes that resurrection life must be a continuation of this life, just with the same structures carried forward.

Jesus answers with a clean rebuke: “You are wrong.” Jesus says the Sadducees know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. The resurrection is not just this life extended forever. The resurrection is something greater, something so full and powerful that the present categories cannot contain it. Marriage is not carried into heaven in the same way, not because heaven gives less, but because heaven gives more. Marriage may be “made in heaven,” but it is not made for heaven. A beautiful marriage is not ultimate either, so even the best intimacy here is only a small taste of what is coming. Heaven means no widows, no loneliness, no divorce, no grudges, no broken relationships, and no love that falls apart. The first moment in the arms of Jesus will make even a thousand years of misery look like one bad night in a bad hotel.

Jesus also corrects the Sadducees from the very Scriptures they claim to honor. God says, “I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” God does not say, “I was.” The living God keeps covenant in the present tense. When God puts his love on a person, that relationship cannot become past tense. Death does not have the power to make God say “was” over his people. Because Jesus goes to the cross and rises from the dead, resurrection hope is not only an Easter doctrine. Resurrection faith is meant to shape finances, parenting, suffering, evangelism, and every dark valley here and now.
