Living Faithfully: Responsibilities of the Christian Community
Summary
In my recent journey through New Zealand and Australia, I was struck by the majesty of God's creation, from the Southern Alps to the Milky Way. This awe-inspiring experience reminded me of the greatness of God and our smallness, yet His love for us is immense. As we return to our daily lives, we are called to live out our faith actively, not just in anticipation of Christ's return, but in the present reality. Our study of 1 Thessalonians 5:12-15 highlights four key responsibilities for Christians: to keep order, pursue peace, be responsible, and show love.
Firstly, keeping order in the church is essential. Just as any organization requires structure, the church needs leadership to function effectively. Respect for church leaders is crucial, not because they are infallible, but because their role is to guide and shepherd the congregation. This respect fosters order, which is a testimony to the world of God's nature as a God of order.
Secondly, we are called to pursue peace. The church should be a sanctuary from the world's chaos, a place where peace prevails despite disagreements. This peace is not about uniformity but about unity in diversity, striving to maintain harmony and avoiding the toxic environment of conflict and gossip.
Thirdly, being responsible involves recognizing our duties within the church. We are not merely consumers of spiritual services but active participants in the body of Christ. Encouraging the timid, helping the weak, and being patient with all are practical expressions of our responsibility. This commitment to our roles ensures the church's growth and impact.
Lastly, showing love is paramount. Love transcends retaliation and seeks the good of others, reflecting Christ's sacrificial love for us. This love is not just about refraining from harm but actively doing good, even to those who may have wronged us. It is through such love that we demonstrate the transformative power of the gospel.
As we navigate the complexities of life, let us align ourselves with these responsibilities, moving in sync with one another, and lightening the burdens of past grievances. In doing so, we can effectively witness to the world the difference Christ makes in our lives.
Key Takeaways:
1. Keep Order: Respect for church leadership is essential for maintaining order within the church. This respect is not about blind obedience but recognizing the God-given role of leaders to guide and shepherd the congregation. Order in the church serves as a testimony to the world of God's nature as a God of order. [04:48]
2. Pursue Peace: The church should be a place of peace, free from the drama and conflict that often characterize the world. Pursuing peace involves accepting decisions with humility and striving for unity despite differences. This peace is a powerful witness to the world of the transformative power of the gospel. [18:48]
3. Be Responsible: Christians have a responsibility to actively participate in the life of the church, using their gifts to serve others. This involves encouraging the timid, helping the weak, and being patient with all. Such responsibility ensures the church's growth and impact in the world. [24:09]
4. Show Love: Love is the hallmark of the Christian life, transcending retaliation and seeking the good of others. This love reflects Christ's sacrificial love for us and is a powerful testimony to the world. By showing love, we demonstrate the difference Christ makes in our lives. [34:24]
5. Align and Sync: Just as a kayak moves smoothly when paddlers are in sync, the church functions effectively when members align with their responsibilities. This involves letting go of past grievances and working together in harmony. Such alignment allows the church to effectively witness to the world. [36:22]

Day 1: Respectful Order in the Church
Respect for church leadership is essential for maintaining order within the church. This respect is not about blind obedience but recognizing the God-given role of leaders to guide and shepherd the congregation. Order in the church serves as a testimony to the world of God's nature as a God of order. When church members honor their leaders, they contribute to a harmonious environment that reflects divine order and purpose. This respect is a conscious choice to support and uphold the structure that God has established for the growth and unity of His people. [04:48]
Hebrews 13:17 (ESV): "Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you."
Reflection: Consider how you can show respect and support to your church leaders this week. What specific actions can you take to encourage them in their roles?
Day 2: Pursuing Peace in Diversity
The church should be a place of peace, free from the drama and conflict that often characterize the world. Pursuing peace involves accepting decisions with humility and striving for unity despite differences. This peace is not about uniformity but about unity in diversity, striving to maintain harmony and avoiding the toxic environment of conflict and gossip. By fostering a peaceful environment, the church becomes a powerful witness to the world of the transformative power of the gospel. [18:48]
Ephesians 4:2-3 (ESV): "With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace."
Reflection: Identify a situation in your church or community where peace is needed. How can you contribute to creating a peaceful resolution?
Day 3: Active Responsibility in the Church
Christians have a responsibility to actively participate in the life of the church, using their gifts to serve others. This involves encouraging the timid, helping the weak, and being patient with all. Such responsibility ensures the church's growth and impact in the world. By recognizing and fulfilling their roles, believers contribute to the health and vitality of the church, making it a beacon of hope and love in the community. [24:09]
1 Peter 4:10 (ESV): "As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace."
Reflection: Reflect on the gifts God has given you. How can you use them to serve others in your church this week?
Day 4: Love Beyond Retaliation
Love is the hallmark of the Christian life, transcending retaliation and seeking the good of others. This love reflects Christ's sacrificial love for us and is a powerful testimony to the world. By showing love, we demonstrate the difference Christ makes in our lives. This love is not just about refraining from harm but actively doing good, even to those who may have wronged us. It is through such love that we demonstrate the transformative power of the gospel. [34:24]
1 John 4:19-21 (ESV): "We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, 'I love God,' and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen."
Reflection: Think of someone who has wronged you. How can you show them love and kindness this week, reflecting Christ's love for you?
Day 5: Aligning in Harmony
Just as a kayak moves smoothly when paddlers are in sync, the church functions effectively when members align with their responsibilities. This involves letting go of past grievances and working together in harmony. Such alignment allows the church to effectively witness to the world. By moving in sync with one another, believers lighten the burdens of past grievances and create a unified front that showcases the love and power of Christ. [36:22]
Colossians 3:13-14 (ESV): "Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony."
Reflection: Reflect on any past grievances you may be holding onto. How can you release them and work towards harmony with others in your church?
Quotes
And yet this amazing creator, God of the universe, would love me enough to save me through his son Jesus and would care enough to know my name and to desire to be my friend and would give me a spiritually significant task in this life. It is truly a humbling realization. [00:01:12] (21 seconds)
To meditate upon the greatness of our God and the awesomeness of his creation puts our little issues and petty problems in its proper perspective and place. And yet on Thursday as I flew back to Manila on the plane, I thought to myself, I guess it's back to the daily grind, back to dealing with the issues and problems that come with pastoring a church. [00:01:33] (24 seconds)
In these verses, the apostle Paul urges the Thessalonian Christians and us today to respect the leaders of the church. They are to be respected because they have the responsibility to not only provide pastoral care, but have spiritual authority in the church. As much as one may not like for there to be a hierarchy or leadership structure in the church, just like in any other organization, big or small, there has to be an organizational and leadership structure for the church to function and to function well. [00:04:13] (36 seconds)
While church leaders are to be respected, church leaders need to earn that respect. Now, why is Paul stressing the fact that leaders of the church should be respected and honored? This is so that there will be order in the church, and this is our first biblical responsibility. Number one, keep order. [00:08:35] (23 seconds)
Of all places, the church should be a place that is a respite from the world, where petty infighting, backstabbing, jealousy, backtalks, gossip, intrigue, rumor, character attacks are not present even if they are commonplace in the secular world. Because we are to be different as redeemed children of God so we can be a witness to the world. [00:18:25] (24 seconds)
The Apostle Paul now reminds the readers that followers of Christ have four specific responsibilities to each other in the church. The first responsibility is that we must remind each other of our responsibilities as Christians in the church and to challenge those who are not carrying out their responsibilities to take action. [00:23:35] (20 seconds)
All too often, people think that the church is just a place where they are to be served instead of a place where they are the one serving. They look at the church for what they can get from it instead of seeing themselves as part of the church in order to serve others. [00:24:23] (17 seconds)
The Apostle Paul, knowing human nature, writes, everyone needs to be responsible to do their part with their spiritual gifts given to them to edify one another and build up the church. It boils down to commitment. If people are committed to the cause of Christ, it doesn't matter whose turn it is. [00:25:57] (21 seconds)
In verse 15, the Apostle Paul challenges Christians not to retaliate, especially to other Christians in the church, but instead to show love. And this love isn't just to not retaliate when evil has been done to you, but to go beyond that and do what is good to them and be kind to them. [00:33:21] (21 seconds)
And that's what we are called to do as followers of Christ, especially in the church, so that we can show this world that we live differently because of the Savior that lives in our hearts. My friends, people won't remember the words you say, but they will remember the acts of kindness you show them. [00:34:32] (20 seconds)
Imagine if the reputation of our church is such that GCCP is a church where Christ's love is seen and it is put into action. I had an opportunity to go sea kayaking on a free afternoon on my trip. In our group, there were four tandem kayaks. The first kayak had the guide and a child. [00:35:23] (29 seconds)
