Living Faithfully: Pleasing God Through Our Actions

Sermon Summary

Sermon Clips

"Without faith, it's impossible to please God. Is that the desire of your heart tonight where you go, 'I just want to please Him'? You know, we've been talking about how God loves us regardless of what we've done, and for those of us who believe in His son Jesus, He has forgiven us of everything. Jesus took everything on the cross. Remember, He took us from being objects of wrath to becoming children who are just awaiting His grace forever." [00:00:56]

"Just because we sing songs doesn't mean He's pleased by those songs. We see it in all the scriptures all the time. He flat out says in Malachi 1, 'I wish you would shut the doors to that Temple because I am not pleased with you, and I will not receive your offerings.' Wow, so there are ways in which we sing and teach and give that He says, 'That's not pleasing to me.'" [00:03:10]

"By faith, we understand that the Universe was created by the word of God so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. By faith, Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks." [00:12:14]

"By faith, Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith, he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise." [00:13:30]

"These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return." [00:14:29]

"By faith, Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward." [00:16:14]

"By faith, the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land, but the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, were drowned. By faith, the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days. By faith, Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies." [00:16:56]

"Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated—of whom the world was not worthy—wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth." [00:18:00]

"God is saying, 'Look, this is what it takes to please me. I want you to actually believe in what I say.' Like when Jesus says in John 14, verse 12, 'The things that you've seen me do, you will do these things also and even greater things than these because I'm going to the Father.'" [00:20:36]

"The greatest joys in my life as I look back over these 56 years of life, what were the greatest moments, what were the greatest seasons for me? There were times when Lisa and I did things out of faith where we're like, 'Let's just do it. Let's just do it. I don't know how it's going to end up, but I think God's calling us to do this.'" [00:21:15]

"God wants us now to believe in Him and to believe that we can never be hurt by sacrificing for Him. If you have your Bibles, in Mark chapter 10, verse 28, Peter began to say to Him, 'See, we have left everything and followed you.' Jesus said, 'Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the gospel who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time.'" [00:31:18]

"I share this because I want you guys at your age to understand that knowing God is so good and just seeing Him work fills you up. You know, when Justin was talking about, 'He eats of me, you never get hungry,' it's like, 'God, you're right.' Like, I'm not craving anything. I'm not longing. That was the difference." [00:41:48]
