God is completely in control, even in the timing of Exodus 25 landing right as Paradise Baptist Church considers a new building and a Make Room capital campaign. Exodus 25:1-9 brings God’s instruction to Moses: take a contribution and build a sanctuary so that God may dwell among His people. God wants a place offered by them, built by them, but designed by Him.
The sanctuary shows that God desires to meet with His people in worship. A church building can be a visual representation to a community that God is real, that help and hope are available, that truth can be found, and that a family of believers stands together against evil. Yet a building by itself is not the sanctuary. An empty room with chairs and lights is just a room. God’s people make it a place set apart when they gather to worship Jesus.
God does not command every Israelite to give toward the tabernacle contribution. God calls for gifts from every person “whose heart moves him.” The treasures of gold, silver, cloth, and spices were already gifts from God, given when Israel plundered Egypt at the exodus. God therefore presses the heart question: will His people be greedy, or will they be generous with what He has already placed in their hands? Every good gift comes from above, including the ability to work and provide.
God also tells Israel to make the sanctuary. Building requires labor, sacrifice, service, and ownership. The people who build, repair, care for, and use their gifts in God’s house learn that it is not somebody else’s responsibility. God’s house belongs to God’s people together. Rather than complaining or turning a blind eye, believers are called to step up and take care of what needs to be done.
God finally gives the pattern for the tabernacle. His design is exact because He is holy, and His people must not cut corners with what belongs to Him. The proposed building plans therefore call for prayerful surrender: “God, this is Your house, not mine. Build what You want.”
Jesus fulfills the deeper promise behind the tabernacle. Through Christ’s sacrifice, believers become the sanctuary, the temple of the Holy Spirit. Christ offered Himself, built believers anew, and carried out the Father’s plan. A beautiful new building means little if God’s people do not live as living sanctuaries, pure and holy, tried and true, representing Jesus everywhere they go.

Key Takeaways
- 1. God moves hearts toward generosity God did not treat the tabernacle contribution as a mere transaction. The gifts came from people whose hearts were stirred because they understood that their resources had first come from God. Generosity becomes meaningful when it is a grateful response to grace rather than a pressured performance. [37:05]
- 2. Service creates faithful ownership God told Israel to build, not merely to watch somebody else build. Labor in God’s house forms a sense of care, responsibility, and love for what belongs to Him. A believer who sees a need and steps up reflects the servant-hearted life God intends for His people. [42:27]
- 3. God’s design must not be altered God gave Israel an exact pattern because His holiness defines how He is approached. Cutting corners may feel practical, but obedience means trusting that God’s blueprint is better than human preference. God’s people must seek His will before asking Him to bless their own plans. [47:18]
- 4. Christ makes believers God’s sanctuary Jesus offered Himself at the cross so that the Holy Spirit could dwell in those who belong to Him. A believer is not merely someone who visits a sacred place, but a living place where God resides. This truth gives weight to every action, word, and choice made outside the church building. [52:14]
- 5. A building needs living sanctuaries A big, beautiful building is still empty if God’s people do not live set apart for Him. God’s people make a gathered space a place of healing, truth, hope, and spiritual family. The deepest need is not simply room on a corner, but hearts prepared to reflect Christ there.
