Our transformation from darkness to light is a profound change that goes beyond mere personal salvation. It is a call to embody the light of Christ in every aspect of our lives. This transformation is not just about a change in status but a call to a new lifestyle that reflects our identity in Christ. As believers, we are urged to live as children of light, allowing the light of Christ to shine through us in our daily interactions and decisions. This involves a conscious effort to reject the ways of darkness and to live in a manner that is consistent with our new identity. [01:22]
"For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true)." - Ephesians 5:8-9 (ESV)
Reflection: In what specific ways can you let the light of Christ shine through your actions and decisions today?
Day 2: Guard Your Faithful Partnerships
The distinction between friendship and partnership is crucial for maintaining the integrity of our faith. While believers are encouraged to maintain friendships with unbelievers, partnerships that compromise our faith are discouraged. This is because partnerships often involve shared values and goals, which can lead to compromising our beliefs. By being mindful of the partnerships we form, we can ensure that our witness in the world remains strong and untainted. It is important to engage with the world, but we must do so without compromising our faith. [08:36]
"Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?" - 2 Corinthians 6:14 (ESV)
Reflection: Are there any partnerships in your life that may be compromising your faith? How can you address this today?
Day 3: Live Distinctly in the World
Believers are called to engage with the world without conforming to its patterns. This involves a delicate balance of being present in the world while living according to the values of the kingdom of light. It is not about isolating ourselves from the world but about living distinctly within it. Our lives should reflect the light of Christ, exposing the darkness around us not through judgment but through the authenticity of our transformed lives. This balance is crucial as we navigate our daily interactions and decisions. [12:41]
"I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world." - John 17:14 (ESV)
Reflection: How can you engage with the world today in a way that reflects the values of the kingdom of light?
Day 4: Recognize the Emptiness of Darkness
The works of darkness are ultimately unfruitful and empty. Reflecting on our past lives helps us appreciate the new purpose and fulfillment found in Christ. This reflection serves as a reminder of the futility of living in darkness and the abundant life that comes from walking in the light. By recognizing the emptiness of our past ways, we can fully embrace the new life and purpose that Christ offers. This awareness encourages us to live in a way that naturally reveals the truth and light of the gospel. [17:15]
"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." - Romans 6:23 (ESV)
Reflection: Reflect on a time when you pursued something that ultimately felt empty. How does your new life in Christ offer true fulfillment?
Day 5: Shine the Light of Christ
The light of Christ in us naturally exposes the darkness around us. This is not about condemning others but about living authentically in a way that reveals the truth of the gospel. Our lives should be a testament to the transformative power of Christ, shining brightly in a world that often embraces darkness. By living in a way that reflects the light of Christ, we can expose the works of darkness and point others to the hope and truth found in the gospel. [21:33]
"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden." - Matthew 5:14 (ESV)
Reflection: How can you let the light of Christ in you expose darkness in a loving and authentic way today?
Sermon Summary
In Ephesians 5:6-14, Paul urges believers to live as children of light, emphasizing the transformation from darkness to light through Christ. This transformation is not just a change in identity but also a call to a new lifestyle that reflects this identity. The passage warns against being deceived by empty words and becoming partners with those who live in disobedience. Instead, believers are called to expose the unfruitful works of darkness by living lives that reflect the light of Christ. This involves a clear distinction between friendship and partnership with unbelievers, where the latter is discouraged to maintain the integrity of one's faith.
Paul's message is not about isolating oneself from the world but about living distinctly within it. He emphasizes that while believers are not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers, they are still to engage with the world without compromising their faith. This balance is crucial, as believers are called to be in the world but not of it. The challenge is to live in such a way that the light of Christ in us exposes the darkness around us, not through judgmental attitudes but through the authenticity of our transformed lives.
The apostle Paul also addresses the futility of the works of darkness, highlighting their ultimate emptiness and lack of true fulfillment. He encourages believers to reflect on their past lives and recognize the lack of fruit from those times. This reflection serves as a reminder of the new life and purpose found in Christ. The call to expose the works of darkness is not about condemning others but about living in a way that naturally reveals the truth and light of the gospel.

Sermon Clips
For at one time you were darkness but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light, for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true, and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness but instead expose them. [00:01:09]
It is our identity in Christ which then gives rise to our activity for Christ. It is our new life in Jesus which then is the foundation of our new lifestyle. And this of course is not unique to Paul in his letter to the Ephesians. He says similarly in Colossians, the Father has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. [00:02:36]
And so it is because they're no longer what they once were, that they must no longer live as they once did, and it is foundationally important that we get a hold of that. Throughout the entire first half of chapter five the emphasis has been on life and lifestyle walking. [00:03:34]
The challenge that comes across is a clear challenge: you're different now therefore you live differently now. Notice carefully what he says. He doesn't say therefore do not become friends with them. He says do not become partners with them. He's not ruling out friendship; he's ruling out partnership. [00:08:21]
The reason that we are not to be partners with the sons of disobedience is because we are now members of a new group. As we have seen in Colossians 1 from what we just quoted, we are now in the sense of light. So we were once in a band and the band was called the sons of disobedience and we're no longer in that band. [00:06:46]
He's not actually calling for the establishing of a Christian ghetto. He is not arguing for a monasticism if we might put it that way. He is not giving a foundation for some of us who would like to make a statement like this a kind of call to ensure that our contacts are exclusively with Christians. [00:11:37]
Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. Don't be unequally yoked with unbelievers. When I read yoked I thought two things: one, I thought about oxen and the picture of a yoke which I think you're supposed to think, and then I actually thought at a far more trivial level of the egg and spoon race at our sports day. [00:13:10]
The works of darkness are unfruitful. They're ultimately empty. They're an expression of futility. One of the great questions that confronts a man or a woman every day that we awaken is, you know, what am I actually doing? What am I, where am I going? How do I make sense of this strange existence? [00:17:15]
What fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? What fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you're now ashamed? Now I could ask people to come up here and we could spend the balance of the time and numbers of you come up and say absolutely no fruit at all. [00:18:40]
Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness but now he tells them something that they need to be doing, not something they shouldn't be doing. So he turns positively. What are we to do? Expose them. Expose them. Who or what is the them? That then refers to the unfruitful works, not to the unfruitful workers. [00:19:45]
What he is seeing is that the essential difference in the believer's life, the shining light that is present in the life of the believer however strong or dim it may be at any point along the way, but the light in the believer shows up the dark stuff for what it is. It shows up the dark stuff for what it is. [00:21:33]
Our lives are to reflect the light of the gospel as we walk in a dark world. It's our prayer at Truth For Life that God will work through these messages to lead those who are unbelievers to follow Jesus and to encourage believers to remain faithful in a culture that is increasingly challenging.
