Day 1: Locked Doors and the Breath of Peace

The disciples huddled in fear, doors bolted tight, when Jesus materialized in their midst. His first words weren’t rebukes about their doubt or demands for action, but a gift: “Peace.” This peace isn’t the absence of storms but the presence of Christ in the storm. It settles internal chaos before addressing external circumstances. Like Amazon packages, we can’t deliver what we haven’t opened. Jesus’ peace isn’t for hoarding—it’s meant to steady our hearts so we can steady others. [10:14]

John 20 shows the disciples behind locked doors after the resurrection, afraid because Jesus has been killed and they believe trouble is coming for them too. Jesus steps right into the middle of that fear and says, “Peace be with you.” Peace does not mean the storm around life has stopped. Jesus’ peace is the confidence that, because a believer belongs to him, whatever is happening around life does not get to control what is happening within life.

Philippians 4 gives the alternative to worry: pray about everything, tell God what is needed, and thank him for what he has already done. Jesus then says, “As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” Purpose means receiving the baton, not starting a different race. Jesus completed his part of the race by bringing people back into relationship with God through the cross and resurrection. Jesus now sends his disciples to continue that same mission, one person at a time. Purpose asks not only, “What do you want me to do?” but, “Who are you sending me to?” The “one” may need prayer, grace, forgiveness, an invitation, encouragement, a listening ear, or simply somebody who will point them to Jesus.

Jesus finally breathes on the disciples and tells them to receive the Holy Spirit. Power makes clear that living like Jesus cannot happen through human strength, experience, intelligence, or good intentions. The Holy Spirit empowers love for difficult people, forgiveness for deep wounds, humility for costly service, and trust when God’s outcome does not look like the desired outcome. Jesus calls his people to unlock the doors of fear, receive his peace, purpose, and power, and step out into the world.
