Live Humbly

Humility stands underneath the fruit of the Spirit like a foundation. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control do not grow out of self-confidence. The grace of God makes a person what that person is, and that reality should keep the heart low before the Lord.

Paul gives the Philippian church a picture of unity that comes from receiving encouragement in Christ, comfort from agape love, participation in the Spirit, gut level affection, and mercy. These gifts from God are not meant to stay private. They are meant to make Paul’s joy complete by forming one mind, one love, one accord, and one soul among God’s people.

The repeated word “mind” matters because the battle often starts there. The enemy can plant small thoughts that grow into bitterness, suspicion, and division. Unity does not happen in a vacuum. Unity happens in relationship, in the community of faith, and especially as God’s people pray together, discern together, and agree together before the Lord.

Philippians 2 gives no room, zero, not even a fraction, for selfish ambition or conceit. Selfish ambition tries to get ahead at whatever cost. Conceit fills the heart with vanity, status, and self-importance. Humility gets down to the bottom of the ladder, encourages others upward, and looks not only to personal interests but also to the interests of others.

Jesus is the ultimate example of humility. Though he was in the form of God, he did not cling to the privileges of deity. He emptied himself, not by becoming less God, but by making room to take on humanity. He became 100% God and 100% man, the humble King who took the form of a servant.

The clearest picture of that humility is Jesus kneeling to wash dirty feet. The King of kings lowers himself to the lowest and dirtiest part of the human body. If Jesus did that, then nothing is beneath the servant of the Lord. A humble person in the Lord cannot not serve.

The cross shows how low Jesus went. The One who never had to obey anyone became obedient to death, even death on a cross. Therefore God highly exalted him. Gospel-shaped humility shows both how bad sin really is and how great God’s salvation really is, and its fruit is unity and service.
