Paul moves Galatians 3 from law identity into gospel identity. The law says, “If a person does, then that becomes identity.” The gospel says that is backwards. Doing does not create identity. Doing becomes the natural overflow of an identity already received in Christ.

Paul does not send the Christian heart inward to find itself. Looking in brings depression, looking out brings distress, and looking up brings rest. Paul keeps saying Christ, Christ, Christ. “In Christ Jesus,” “baptized into Christ,” “put on Christ,” “one in Christ Jesus,” and “if belonging to Christ.” The Christian life is not fundamentally about constructing an identity, but receiving one.

The gospel does more than forgive what has been done. The gospel tells the believer who has been made new. Galatians 3:26 says that all are sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. But the text does not say that some believers are sons and others are guests. God’s children are not sleeping on heaven’s pullout sofa. They are at home in the Father’s house.

The refrigerator picture makes the point plain. A child opens the refrigerator because that is home. A stranger cannot just walk in and start drinking milk from the carton. God gives more than permission to enter the house. God gives family privileges, belonging, and the security of a Father’s love.

Faith receives that identity by trusting the object, not by admiring itself. The rope at the climbing wall is strong whether fear feels strong or not. Faith is little faith in a great God. God catches the sinner who lets go, confesses rebellion, and leaps into his arms.
