The Spirit of truth has not gone quiet. John 16:13 promises that He will guide God’s people into all truth, show things to come, and speak what He hears from the Father. Distractions, old routines, and the noise of everyday life can muffle that voice, but they cannot cancel God’s faithfulness. God still says, “Don’t do that,” sometimes through a person, sometimes through His Word, and often right before a person walks into trouble.
First Peter 2:9 calls believers a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a peculiar people. That peculiar people is not meant to be weird for the sake of being weird. God’s people are His exclusive prized possession, something precious that belongs to Him. Christ’s blood has bought them at a price, so they do not belong to the world, and they do not even belong to themselves anymore.
John 10:27-28 gives the security behind that identity. Christ’s sheep hear His voice, Christ knows them, and Christ gives them eternal life. Christ does not hold His people by their strength, because human strength gets weak, distracted, angry, and tempted. Christ says no one can pluck them from His hand. God deals with His children as a Father, not as a stranger dealing with somebody else’s child, and His correction keeps them from running into danger.
Spiritual maturity grows when God’s people stop living on milk and begin taking in meat. The Spirit brings conviction in the middle of anger, bitterness, harsh words, and bad thoughts. The devil’s voice pushes people toward destruction, but God’s voice says, “Stop. Don’t be that way. Try something soft and general.” Forgiveness, restraint, and a desire to do good become evidence that God has not left His children without direction.
The longing for something beyond this world also points to where God’s people belong. C. S. Lewis’s picture of hunger and food, ducklings and water, shows that real desires point to something real that can satisfy them. The desire for joy, meaning, eternity, and God cannot be filled by a better car, more money, or a more comfortable life. Heaven is home because God made His people for another world.
First Samuel 8 and 9 shows the danger of wanting to be like everybody else. Israel rejected God’s rule because the nation wanted a king like the other nations. Saul’s ordinary search for lost donkeys became the beginning of that transition, yet Saul did not even recognize Samuel. God’s people must not forget who they are, whose they are, or how great their God is. This world is not home, and God has never left His people. His people have simply stopped listening.

Key Takeaways
- 1. God still speaks before trouble comes. The Spirit does not merely speak after a person has already made a mess. God often puts a warning in the heart before the bad decision, the angry word, or the step into temptation. Disobedience may still bring consequences, but God’s voice remains a real mercy and a way of escape. [12:23]
- 2. Believers are God’s prized possession. A peculiar people is not a forgotten or unwanted people. Christ has claimed His people through His blood, giving them an identity that competition, approval, and worldly status can never provide. God’s possession carries both comfort and purpose, because what belongs to Him should show forth His praise. [16:54]
- 3. Christ holds His sheep securely. Christ does not tell weak people to save themselves by becoming strong enough. Christ knows His sheep, gives them eternal life, and refuses to let them be snatched from His hand. Fatherly discipline may feel hard in the moment, but it proves that His children are not abandoned to danger. [18:27]
- 4. Heavenly longing exposes worldly emptiness. The world can offer comfort, money, possessions, and distractions, yet none of it can settle a soul made for God. That hunger for eternity is not a flaw to be medicated with more stuff. God has placed that yearning in His people because another home is real. [31:35]
- 5. Wanting to fit in rejects God’s rule. Israel wanted a king because the nation wanted to look like the nations around it. That same pull can make God’s people forget that being different is not a punishment but a calling. God’s people cannot trade His voice for the approval of a world that does not know Him.
