Listening for God in the Still Small Voice

The still small voice of God often comes when the noise finally stops. The lost watch in the dark ice house gives the picture: everybody searched hard, but the boy found it by lying still and listening for the tick, tick, tick. Encounters with God do not always arrive in the loud, wonderful, dramatic moments. Mountaintops can show God’s majesty, but they can also feel lonely. Valleys can be dangerous and painful, but they can become places of growth, beauty, and grace for others walking through the same mess.

Elijah’s journey to Horeb begins in a deep valley, even though he has just seen a great victory on Mount Carmel. Jezebel’s threat sends the prophet running, exhausted, afraid, and ready to die under a bush. Elijah’s fear shows how quickly faithfulness can give way to despair when the work gets hard and the opposition gets personal. God’s response does not begin with condemnation. God sends an angel with food, rest, and the command to get up and eat.

The bamboo image names the hidden work of God in seasons that look empty. The bamboo spends years growing roots beneath the ground before it rises high, and God does not quit on the bamboo. God does not quit on Elijah either. Trials can make a person strong, sorrows can keep a person human, failures can make a person humble, but only God keeps a person going.

God meets Elijah at Horeb, the mountain of God, and asks a searching question: “What are you doing here?” Elijah expects God to arrive in the kind of power that tears apart mountains.
