Paul grounds the child of God in a victory already won: “Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” First Corinthians 15 does not call believers to fight in order to make Christ victorious. Christ has already conquered sin, death, and the grave, and His people fight from that settled place of victory. Therefore, steadfastness, being unmovable, and abounding in the work of the Lord are not vain labor when they are done in Him.
The Christian life does not come with a pass from trouble. Second Timothy says that all who live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution, because Satan does not mind a casual Christian but does attack somebody who gets serious about serving God. Spiritual warfare comes through circumstances that cannot be changed, temptations, fears, discouragements, and especially the hard battle inside the heart while God seems slow to work things out.
First Peter calls the trial of faith more precious than gold tried with fire. Trials allow both rejoicing and heaviness at the same time. A believer can have a settled hope while carrying a broken heart. James shows that the trying of faith worketh patience, and Job shows that suffering does not mean God has lost track of His child. Job did not know everything God was doing, but he knew that God knew the way that he took.
The waters of Marah picture the sweetness that comes when the cross is brought into bitter circumstances. The tree cast into the water points to Christ, and Elim was right around the corner for Israel. Trials may bring growing pains, but they also reveal what the heart is trusting. Faith must trust God’s character when His hand cannot be traced.
Romans 8:28 promises eventual good, not always immediate good. Romans 8:29 shows that God’s purpose is conformity to the image of His Son. Christ suffered, submitted to the Father’s will, died, rose again, and won the victory. Hardship is not proof that Christ has failed, and suffering is not always punishment for some particular sin. God may use even grievous things for His honor, His glory, and the believer’s good.
Christ’s victory settles the believer’s standing before God, breaks sin’s dominion, and secures the future. Scripture, supplication, and submission become the tools for the fight. The Word of God must be wielded as the sword of the Spirit, prayer must bring burdens boldly to the throne of grace, and submission must give God control over the life He purchased. Romans 5 calls tribulation a path that worketh patience, experience, and hope, because the love of God is shed abroad in the heart by the Holy Ghost.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Fight from Christ’s finished victory Christ does not ask His people to manufacture strength strong enough for Satan. His death, resurrection, and present victory establish the ground on which faith stands. Steadfast service grows out of dependence upon Christ, not confidence in personal determination. [27:45]
- 2. Trials reveal what faith is trusting Trouble exposes the things that quietly become substitutes for God, including comfort, control, health, money, or human answers. Faith is deepened when it trusts God’s character even when His actions cannot yet be understood. Job could not explain the road, but he knew God knew the way. [38:39]
- 3. The cross makes bitter waters sweet Marah did not become sweet because Israel ignored its bitterness. The tree placed in the water pictures Christ entering the very place of pain and changing what it produces. The hard place may still be hard, but Christ keeps it from being wasted. [34:56]
- 4. Ask what God is forming Romans 8:28 is not a promise that every trial ends quickly or feels good right away. Romans 8:29 shows that God is forming His children into the image of His Son. The better question is not merely how soon the trial will end, but how obedience, trust, and Christlikeness can grow within it. [41:01]
- 5. Use Scripture, prayer, and surrender The sword of the Spirit gives truth for the fight, supplication brings burdens before God, and submission yields control to the One who bought the life with His blood. These are not shallow religious habits but God’s battle plan for a weary heart. Peace comes as the heart learns to say yes to God in hard times. [56:25]
