Jonah chapter 3 shows a God who gives another opportunity, but that opportunity comes with an expectation of obedience. God had already told Jonah to arise and go to Nineveh in chapter 1, yet Jonah rose to flee. God restored Jonah through repentance in chapter 2, and then the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the second time. God’s grace gave Jonah another chance to be forgiven, another chance to serve, and another chance to do things God’s way instead of his own way.
Jonah arose and went unto Nineveh according to the word of the Lord. Jonah’s feet finally went in the right direction, even though chapter 4 will show that Jonah’s heart still lagged behind. Jonah’s obedience was immediate, and he did not rewrite God’s message to make it easier for Nineveh to hear. Jonah simply declared, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.” God’s people still have the responsibility to preach the Word, not to change it, soften it, or replace it with something more convenient.
Nineveh believed God, not Jonah. Jonah was only the messenger, but God’s Word carried the power to produce faith and change lives. A mail carrier does not write the letter he delivers, and God’s people do not carry the burden of changing hearts. God’s people carry the responsibility of delivering the gospel. The apartments, neighborhoods, workplaces, families, and streets around them are their Nineveh. Too many souls are dying while God’s people put off prayer, forgiveness, surrender, witnessing, or dealing with sin.
Nineveh’s faith produced a visible change. The king stepped down from his throne, laid aside his robe, put on sackcloth, sat in ashes, and called the city to turn from its evil way. Genuine repentance is more than feeling bad. Repentance is a change of mind toward God that produces a change of direction. Pride says, “I got it,” but humility says, “God is right.” Revival does not begin by pointing out what is wrong with everybody else. Revival begins when God is allowed to search the heart, correct the spirit, expose bitterness, and change the life.
God saw that Nineveh turned from evil, and God withheld the judgment He had declared. God did not change His character. Nineveh responded to His warning. God delights in mercy, and nobody is too far gone for His grace. God restored one rebellious man so that He could reach thousands of people. Jonah’s life calls every child of God to ask not merely whether God has given another chance, but what is being done with that chance.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Grace gives another opportunity to obey God gave Jonah another chance, not because Jonah deserved it, but because God is rich in mercy. That grace was not permission to delay again or take sin lightly. God’s restored servants are called to use the opportunity they have been given for His purpose. [22:49]
- 2. Feet and heart must move together Jonah went to Nineveh, but his heart was not fully surrendered to God’s will. Outward obedience can become little more than routine when love for God and love for people are missing. God desires service that comes from a heart willing to please Him, not merely from feet going through the motions. [29:23]
- 3. God’s Word changes hearts, not people Nineveh believed God, because the power was never in Jonah’s personality, ability, or persuasion. God’s people are responsible to faithfully deliver the gospel, while God alone gives faith and changes lives. This truth frees faithful witnesses from trying to manufacture results. [45:25]
- 4. Repentance turns from evil toward God Nineveh did not merely put on sackcloth and feel badly about judgment. The city turned from violence and wickedness because it took God’s warning seriously. Real repentance humbles pride, changes direction, and begins with allowing God to expose what is wrong in the heart. [54:44]
- 5. Every believer can do something God does not require every person to serve in the same capacity, but He does call every child of God to be surrendered. Comparison keeps attention on what others are or are not doing, while surrender asks what God has placed in one set of hands. God receives glory when His people do what they can do with a heart to please Him.
