Even in the darkest valleys of life, God promises to be our shepherd, guiding, protecting, and providing for us. The setting of Psalm 23 is not a mountaintop or a place of ease, but the valley of the shadow of death—a place of fear, uncertainty, and threat. Yet, it is precisely here that God’s presence is most profound, offering comfort and assurance. The promise is not that we will avoid the valley, but that we will never be alone in it. God prepares a table for us in the presence of our enemies, anoints us, and pursues us with goodness and mercy, inviting us to dwell with Him forever. [06:41]
Psalm 23 (ESV):
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you feel surrounded by darkness or fear? How can you invite God to shepherd you through that valley today?
Jesus declares Himself to be the way, the truth, and the life, and promises that those who follow Him will not walk in darkness but have the light of life. In a world filled with confusion, competing voices, and deception, Jesus offers Himself as the only true guide. His truth exposes the lies that keep us in bondage and leads us into freedom. When we abide in His word, we are set free from the darkness that tries to define us, and we discover a reality shaped by His love and wisdom. [10:32]
John 8:12, 31-32 (ESV):
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Reflection: What is one lie or area of confusion you are facing right now? Ask Jesus to shine His light and truth into that specific place today.
The enemy’s most effective weapon is deception—he starts with a truth and twists it into a lie that sticks to us, shaping how we see ourselves and our future. These lies can feel like rocks in our shoes, affecting every step we take and influencing our choices, relationships, and sense of worth. But God’s word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path, exposing the lies and offering us a better word—one that defines us by His love, forgiveness, and purpose. We are not condemned to live by the labels or wounds of our past; God’s truth can break the power of every lie if we bring it into His light. [28:11]
Psalm 119:105 (ESV):
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Reflection: What is one negative label or lie that has “stuck” to you over the years? Write it down, bring it to God, and ask Him to speak His better word over you today.
At the table of the Lord, Jesus offers us His body and blood as the new covenant—a better word that redefines our identity, worth, and future. Communion is not just a ritual, but a tangible reminder that God has prepared a place for us, even in the presence of our enemies and the lies that cling to us. As we come to the table, we are invited to receive the reality of Christ’s sacrifice, letting His word and presence change us from the inside out. The power of the lie fades in the light of His truth, and we are welcomed home as beloved sons and daughters. [39:43]
Luke 22:19-20 (ESV):
And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.”
Reflection: As you take communion (or pause to remember Jesus’ sacrifice), what is one area where you need to let His better word replace an old lie? How can you receive His invitation to the table today?
God does not passively wait for us to find our way back—He actively pursues us with goodness and mercy, determined to break every lie and bring us into the fullness of His truth. His word is not just information; it is power—like fire and a hammer that shatters the rocks of deception and shame. When we allow God’s word to define us, we step into a new reality where the old labels lose their grip and we are free to walk in the light. The question is not whether God is pursuing us, but whether we will let Him catch us and speak His better word over our lives. [41:35]
Jeremiah 23:29 (ESV):
“Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?”
Reflection: Where in your life do you sense God pursuing you with His truth and love? What step can you take today to let His word break through any remaining “rocks” of lies or shame?
It’s hard to believe we’re already at Christmas, a season that reminds us of light breaking into darkness. As we reflect on the year, I’m deeply moved by the tangible ways God has been at work among us—lives changed, baptisms, and even new ministries springing up in places like prisons. These are not just numbers; they are stories of people encountering the Good Shepherd in the valley of life.
We all live in what Scripture calls “the valley of the shadow of death”—a world marked by darkness, uncertainty, and the ever-present whispers of lies. The most famous psalm, Psalm 23, doesn’t promise a life free from valleys, but it does promise a Shepherd who walks with us, prepares a table for us, and pursues us with goodness and mercy. The real question is not whether we’ll face darkness, but which voice we’ll listen to in the midst of it.
Jesus claims to be the way, the truth, and the life. In a world where truth feels slippery and every headline offers a different “reality,” Jesus stands as the unchanging light. The enemy, the thief, is relentless in his attempts to stick lies to us—lies that often begin with a kernel of truth, making them all the more believable. These lies can shape our identity, our sense of worth, and the way we walk through life. They’re like rocks in our shoes, changing every step we take.
But the good news is that the Shepherd doesn’t wait for us to find our way out of the valley. He comes after us, aggressively pursuing us with His light and His better word. God’s word isn’t just a comforting opinion; it’s reality-shaping truth. Where the enemy says we’re broken, outsiders, or unlovable, God’s word declares us chosen, forgiven, and beloved. The invitation is to bring our lies into the light, to let the truth of Jesus expose and erase them, and to walk toward the table He’s prepared for us—even in the presence of our enemies.
Communion is a tangible reminder of this better word. As we come to the table, we’re not just remembering a story; we’re receiving the reality of Christ’s body and blood, the truth that sets us free. The light is coming for you—if you’ll let Him. Will you walk into the light and let His better word define your life?
This psalm is so famous because it's jam-packed full of incredible promises. Like that the God of the universe who made everything, planets and galaxies and all of that, that He cares about little old you. Like a shepherd who cares for his sheep. Incredible. And the promise, like that shepherd prepared a table before you in the presence of your enemies. But what's startling about this psalm is not the promises. Though the promises are incredible. The startling part is where the promises take place. The setting for the entire psalm is the valley of the shadow of death. [00:06:37] (40 seconds) #ValleyOfTheShadowPromises
See, according to God, the name of the planet you and I find ourselves on right now, it's not earth. It's the land of the death shadow. Every single one of us lives in the valley of the shadow of death every single day. Every one of us was born into it. All of our kids were born into it. Their kids will be born into it. All of us live in the valley. And the Bible's not shy about this. This is why Jesus never said, never said that he came to be a helpful, moral teacher. He said he came to be what Isaiah promised, the light to a world trapped in darkness. [00:09:36] (41 seconds) #LivingInTheValleyOfDeath
See, the problem is that there is not just a good shepherd in the valley called life. There's also a thief in the valley. John 10, Jesus said, the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life and have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. See, according to Jesus, you'll hear him in the valley. You'll hear the good shepherd, but you'll also hear the thief. [00:13:43] (29 seconds) #GoodShepherdVsThief
Do you know in the New Testament of the Bible, there are 40 warnings only, just in the New Testament, 40 different warnings about falling for deception and about falling for lies. Why would there be so many? Well, it's because a lie is the most pervasive and effective weapon that our enemy has. The first time our enemy came to humanity, if you go all the way back to the beginning of the story, go back to the beginning of the Bible and the book of Genesis, he did not come with a sword. [00:16:53] (26 seconds) #LiesStickLikePoop
And because of those two truths, it made it very easy for the enemy to stick a lie to me that said, I have a broken mind. Just stepped in it nearly every day getting ready for school. I thought my mind doesn't work. There's long periods of my life where I literally thought, I don't think God will ever be able to use me. I don't think I'll ever be successful. I don't think I'll ever have a house or a family or anything because my mind doesn't work the way that everybody else's mind seems to work. [00:20:40] (25 seconds) #TruthAndLiesWithin
Is it the truth that you did get rejected and they did leave? But is the lie that you are alone? Is the truth that you grew up poor and you have been successful in business, is the lie that you're only as safe as your bank account? It is the truth that you were abused and the people who should have protected you didn't. But is the lie that you will never be safe? See, all of us, all of us, all of us have these places in our lives. [00:22:37] (42 seconds) #GoodShepherdChasesYou
Well I have good news for you. If you're someone like me who's ever stepped in a lie. If you're someone like me who's ever made your own way I have good news. See in the valley there's a good shepherd. And that good shepherd promises to be the light. In fact he says that he'll be the light that will come chase you down. See the gospel of Jesus is not that you and I have to make our way back to him. It's that he comes after us. [00:29:06] (36 seconds) #WalkIntoTheLight
See the lies in your life that stick to you they will not fade with time. They will not fade when you chase accomplishments. They will not fade when you walk your own way. They will only fade when you walk towards the light himself. The question is will you? Do you want to keep your lie? Or do you want to walk into the light? Do you want the word that's stuck to you or do you want a better word? [00:31:25] (35 seconds) #BetterWordOverLies
And the place that we hear the better word it's the valley. It's the better word. It's better for two reasons. One because God's word is not like you and I's word. When I speak it's my opinion. When I speak I might change my mind. But when God speaks it defines reality itself. It's not an opinion. It's not a perspective. It literally shapes reality. [00:32:15] (25 seconds) #TablePreparedInDarkness
If you'll walk to the table if you'll walk to the table the lie that's on your feet will literally begin to fade away and I'm telling you it has no shot it has no shot to stick in the power of the light of His word. Jeremiah 23 29 says is not my word like fire declares the Lord and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces you want the rock in your shoe to be gone walk to the word Himself what power could the lie ever have over you and the light the answer is none the answer is none.
