Lift Up Your Eyes: Fields White Unto Harvest

John 4 opens with Jesus sitting weary at the well while His disciples go into the city for food. Jesus turns something as simple as water into a gospel opportunity, pointing a broken woman toward the living water. The woman leaves her water pot, goes into the city, and says, “Come, see a man.” Her testimony brings people to Christ, but the words of Jesus bring them to saving faith.

The gospel leaves no room for confidence in a Christian home, baptism, good works, church attendance, or family heritage. Jesus Christ alone saves sinners who repent of whatever they had trusted before and believe in Him. John 3:16 reaches the church kid, the person carrying deep shame, and every “whosoever” who will come to Christ in simple faith. The question is not whether someone is trying hard enough, but whether that person has stopped trying to save himself and trusted Christ alone.

The Christian life continues in the same way it begins: coming unto Christ. Colossians calls those who have received Christ to walk in Him. Moses at the burning bush, Abram returning to the altar, Isaiah seeing the Lord high and lifted up, Daniel praying three times daily, and Mary sitting at Christ’s feet all show that a life changes when it stays near God. The shortage of laborers is tied to the shortage of believers who are truly abiding in Christ day by day.

Christ’s work of salvation is finished. His cry from the cross, “It is finished,” means no human work can be added to His saving work. Christ nevertheless leaves His people in the world with a mission: proclaim the finished gospel to every creature and to every nation. Revelation 5 promises a gathered people from every kindred, tongue, people, and nation, worshiping and reigning with Christ forever.

Jesus commands His disciples to lift up their eyes because the fields are white already to harvest. The harvest does not need more excuses about age, retirement, strange food, language, family, or fear. God gives grace to do what He calls His people to do. Eyes lifted first to the God who is high and lifted up can then see the fields clearly, because the distractions and excuses of earth grow dim in the light of His glory and grace.

The harvest includes the neighbor, classmate, coworker, family member, and unreached peoples around the world. God is already at work in Ghana, Italy, the Philippines, Colombia, France, Cambodia, and beyond. The call is to keep sowing, keep witnessing, and remain faithful. Eternal fruit and eternal rejoicing belong to those who sow and reap together, far surpassing anything money or this world can give.
