Service // LEVEL UP | Ps. Matthew Francey

Service turns the whole idea of leveling up upside down. The world says leveling up means more money, a better job, a bigger house, more influence, and getting ahead of everybody else. Jesus says that anyone who wants to become great must become a servant, and anyone who wants to be first must be a slave. Jesus does not level up by getting above people. Jesus levels up by lifting people up.

Mark 10 puts James and John in front of that challenge. Their desire to be Jesus’ right and left hand men reveals the same question that sits in so much of life: “What’s in it for me?” Selfishness wants the best seat, the biggest role, and the most recognition. Christ gives a different way, because the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Service is good for the person serving. Proverbs says, “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” Service costs time, energy, comfort, overtime, and sometimes an early start or a late finish. Yet God has designed giving in such a way that tiredness and refreshment can live in the same place. Service takes the eyes off personal problems, personal ambitions, and all the notifications fighting for attention, then asks, “What can I do for somebody else?”

Service also does good to others because the heart behind it is always people, not simply filling a role. Philippians calls believers to value others above themselves and look to the interests of others. That does not mean personal needs do not exist. That means other people carry needs too, often behind a face that makes everything look fine. A smile at the door, help with a buggy, gentleness, excellence, prayer, or simply remembering somebody’s name can move a person from feeling invisible to feeling valued.

Service shares the good of God. Peter says that each person should use whatever gift has been received to serve others, so that God may be praised through Jesus Christ. God gives gifts not merely for reputation or talent, but so that his goodness can be experienced by somebody else. The gift comes from God, works through a person in service, and brings glory back to God.

Jesus has already shown what love looks like by giving his life, mercy, grace, and everything needed. Service does not make a person become like Jesus; service reflects the Jesus already received. Every level of faith has a next step, whether that means following Jesus, joining a team, or noticing a need in the community without waiting for an invitation.
