1. "We're all on a journey called life. And with any journey, we have to decide what to take with us on that journey and what to leave behind. Well, the process of packing for a life journey can be more complicated than just packing for a vacation. It's about deciding what it is that you need to bring. Do you need that extra pair of shoes or a rain jacket? The journey of life is about deciding what you're going to carry. You're going to carry your heart, your mind, and your spirit."

2. "Fear and anxieties are emotions that everyone experiences at some point in their lives. Nobody is immune to worry. After all, these are universal responses to the uncertainties and the challenges that we face in life and I know that we all have something that brings us down that road. But when fear and anxiety become the dominant forces in our lives, they can weigh us down and they can prevent us from living in the freedom, and the peace that God truly intends for us."

3. "I think Jesus understood that fear and anxiety would be a part of our human existence. He wasn't shy about it. He spoke often, though, about trusting God's provision for life and not worrying about what tomorrow might bring. For example, there's a passage in Matthew 6 where Jesus tells us, and it's titled in our pew Bibles, it says, do not worry. Jesus says, therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink or about your body or what you will wear."

4. "Paul tells us, do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. In the passage, I want you to notice, though, that Paul doesn't say that we're never going to worry. He doesn't say, oh, you're never going to be anxious. Instead, he tells us to not ignore our fears. We can't just pretend they don't exist."

5. "When we choose to do this, something incredible happens, Paul says. God exchanges our anxieties for peace. And so, how do we trade our anxieties for God's peace? It begins with this, with acknowledging that we are carrying burdens that we were never meant to carry alone. Fear and anxiety can often stem from a desire for control, control over our circumstances, our future, and even other people's opinions of us. But the reality is that we can't control everything. Things don't always go the way we want."

6. "In life, we are the passengers and God is the pilot. We are called to trust that God is perfect in wisdom and in power and in love. God knows the direction. He knows where we're headed. He knows how to get us there safely. And when we bring our worries to God in prayer, we acknowledge that God is in control. And not us. And when we do just that, God promises to bring us peace. But this peace that Paul talks about isn't just any peace. Paul says that it's a peace that transcends all understanding."

7. "When you feel fear and anxiety creeping in, we should take it as a cue, perhaps, to instead pray. Instead of dwelling on our fears, turn those fears into our prayers. Bring your concerns to God and trust that God hears you. It's important also to remember that prayer isn't just about asking, asking God for things, but it's also about thanking God for who God is and what has been done for you. Because without the sacrifice of Jesus, we would not be able to know the limitless mercy and grace of God."

8. "Fear and anxiety are things that thrive on negative thoughts, but God's word is full of promises that can calm our hearts. For example, one of those promises is found in Isaiah 41, verse 10, where God says, Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God, and I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. What a reassuring promise that is from God that we will be strengthened and upheld when we place our trust in the Lord."

9. "We aren't meant to carry our burdens alone. God has given us the gift of community and what a gift it is. He's given us the church, these people, your brothers and sisters in Christ. He's given us these people to walk alongside us and help to bear one another's burdens. When we share our fears and our anxieties with our trusted friends and our fellow believers, we can lighten our load and invite others to pray for us and encourage us."

10. "Paul tells us that when we present our request to God with thanksgiving, the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus. This peace doesn't just soothe our nerves, but it guards our hearts and our minds and it acts like a shield against the lies of fear. The fear that tries to make us believe that we're alone, that things are hopeless or that God isn't controlling us."
