1. "So it's easy to just jump right in and start reading because that's what we're supposed to do, right? We're supposed to read the Bible because it just changes us, right? Well, yes, but in order to have it change us, we have to understand its context because that's an important operative word, context. There's a story. There's a situation. There's an audience. There's an intent." [03:45] (25 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

2. "Paul experienced his own persecution along the way. In fact, this was why he was giving testimony, the one that we just read. He was persecuted. He was imprisoned. He was about to be imprisoned. And we know that Paul experienced many hardships on his journeys. He was persecuted, but he also experienced hardships. Many of those hardships, Those he wrote about in his second letter to the Corinthian church. He said he was flogged and whipped and shipwrecked three times. I think one time is enough." 3. "Not to mention other things. Did you hear that? All those other things we would think like, okay, I'm out. But he kept going. And the most important one to him that was the greatest hardship, it was his deep love and concern for all the churches, for the people of Philippi who he was writing to. That Paul continued and persevered to endure hardship after hardship after hardship after hardship. He saw it as worth it to bring that gospel message to them, to have the relationship with them." 4. "By honoring the Sabbath, we trust God with the results of his mission instead of trying to control it our way. So we also see in the text that Paul's in with this particular community to plant a church was Lydia, a woman. At one point, Paul was put in jail in Philippi for casting out a demon from a little girl who was chasing him around. And after he was released from jail, we see Lydia open her home to be hospitable and have that be a central meeting place. The church was planted there in the home." 5. "Women were a vital part of ministry there, not only in the economy and the culture of Philippi, but also in the church of Philippi. And we see also that the church in Philippi was generous. They gave cheerfully and loyally to Paul and made sure that his needs were taken care of so that he can continue his ministry. He commended them and said this, and you Philippians know that in the early days of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving except you alone." 6. "So woven throughout Paul's letter to the Philippians, we can sense the loyalty that they had for him throughout his ministry by being part of the ministry, partner with him. And he showed admiration for them. So why? Why this letter? What was the purpose that he wrote it? In this letter, it's really a series of essays woven throughout four chapters. Paul underscores foundational points of how to think and make it a lifestyle to follow Jesus, both personally and also in the Christian community." 7. "Paul would rather journey into eternity with Jesus because that's always better, right? He would rather be with Christ in glory. But he realized, recollecting all the hardships that he had endured, the hardship he was in at the time, and he saw that was far better for this particular church, for those who he had loved so dearly, to stay with them. So why did Paul write this letter? Love. This wasn't some letter that Paul wrote to people he didn't know. This was an intimate letter written to some of his dearest friends, co-laborers, supporters of him, financially and prayer." [22:13] (54 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

8. "And he intended to bring his audience encouragement, a little admonition, and inspire them to live boldly for Christ despite their circumstances. With this perspective, stand together with me, and I'm going to read the first two verses of this letter to the Philippians. And if you want to turn in your Bibles to Philippians chapter 1, or swipe on your phone or your iPad or your Kindle, whatever you've got, we're going to read the first two verses. And then next week, I'm going to dive into the first chapter of Philippians a lot deeper." [22:57] (44 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
