You Are the Light: Let Your Light Shine

John opens with the Word that was with God and was God, and declares that in Him was life, and that life was the light of men. Jesus then says, “I am the light of the world,” showing that following Him brings the light of life and removes the need to walk in darkness. The Word, Jesus, and light are connected, and Psalm 119 makes it plain: God’s Word is a lamp unto the feet and a light unto the path.

Matthew 5 brings that truth home personally: “You are the light of the world.” Christ does not call believers merely a light among many lights. He calls them the light, a city set on a hill that cannot be hidden. Light is not meant to be put under a bushel. Light is meant to be put on a candlestick, where it gives light to everybody in the house and causes men to glorify the Father.

Darkness makes light more visible. Challenges, confusion, pressure, and hard situations become places where the light of God in a believer should shine even more. Light speaks of insight, understanding, illumination, wisdom, revelation, and solution. When the Word comes alive in a situation, confusion gives way to understanding, and understanding shows what to do.

The Word becomes real through hearing, speaking, declaring, meditating, prayer, and fellowship with God. Faith comes by hearing, and the Word must be said until it becomes reality. God’s Word is spirit, life, and active. As the heart stays tuned in prayer, the Holy Spirit brings remembered Scriptures alive and gives the right word for the moment.

Isaiah 60 declares, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come,” and connects light with the glory of God. Darkness may cover the earth and gross darkness the people, but the Lord rises upon His people, and His glory is seen upon them. Favor, glory, peace, strength, and understanding come with light. The believer must consciously know, “I am light,” because light can only shine.

Proverbs also gives a warning and a prayer: a shining light must not be extinguished. Just as different natural lights can be bright, dim, or fading, spiritual light must be kept burning through fellowship and the Word. A shining light draws men, not merely toward a person, but toward Christ within that person. The desire is that men see the light, glorify God, and desire to know Him.
