Paul sets the stakes by turning a dad-at-the-restaurant moment into a kingdom question. If a father asks, why should I trust you with my daughter, the heart wants to list a resume. Paul knows the same reflex shows up with God. So Romans 4 takes Abraham, the guy every Israelite knows, and asks what made him right with God. The text will not let the answer be obedience or pedigree. “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” Faith, not works. Gift, not wage.
Then Paul draws the line straight to justification. Justification is God declaring guilty sinners righteous because of Jesus. The courtroom image lands the point. The charges are true. The excuses do not answer the indictment. Jesus steps in, not to argue innocence, but to stand as substitute. “I’ll take his place.” Justice is not lowered. Justice is satisfied at the cross, and righteousness is credited to the guilty.
Romans 4 keeps pressing the same grace. The promise to Abraham and his descendants did not come by law-keeping but by a right relationship that comes by faith. That flattens any religious hierarchy. Jewish law-keepers cannot boast. Gentile outsiders are not second class. The promise is received by faith, given as a free gift, for all who believe like Abraham.
Romans 5 announces the peace that follows. “Since we have been made right… by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.” Not trying to make peace. Have peace. The war is over. Then the sentence that undoes every religious resume shows up. “God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” Not after a clean-up. Not once lovable. While still sinners. The word Paul uses is strong: certainly. Those made right by Christ’s blood will certainly be saved. Friends of God now. Eternity with God to come.
The big idea lands simple and strong. Outside of Christ, there is nothing to point to that makes anyone acceptable before God. So hallelujah means what it sounds like. Boast in Yahweh. Brag on Jesus. The call is practical. Ask God what the heart is trusting in. Stop trying to earn what Jesus already purchased. Obey because already loved. The right question is not, have I done enough, but, has Jesus done everything necessary for my salvation. The answer is yes. So if asked, why should I let you into my kingdom, the only right plea is Christ alone. Guilty, yet made righteous in Christ. Peace with God, because of Jesus.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Justification is gift, not wage God does not pay out righteousness as a paycheck for religious performance. He credits righteousness to the ungodly who trust Christ, so the guilty wear a verdict they did not earn. This preserves real justice at the cross and real assurance for the sinner who believes. Grace stops the boasting by making the whole thing a gift. [39:33]
- 2. Abraham shows faith before works Abraham gets counted righteous before the knife ever touches the altar and before the law ever shows up. His story cuts the root of moral pride and spiritual insecurity at the same time. Faith rests in God’s promise, then obedience grows from that rest. The order matters for freedom. [37:53]
- 3. Peace with God is certain Paul does not say, try to make peace. He says, have peace, because Jesus finished what the law could never do. The war is over, so condemnation loses its voice and adoption gets the last word. Certainty belongs not to the strong but to the forgiven. [45:56]
- 4. Obedience flows from already-loved hearts Obedience is a response, not a bid for acceptance. When love is secure, commands stop feeling like ladders and start feeling like pathways. Holiness then becomes gratitude in motion, not an anxious hustle. The gospel moves people from earning to enjoying and then to obeying. [53:24]
- 5. Boast only in Jesus, not resume Religious resumes collapse under Romans 4 and 5. Baptism, attendance, giving, ministry, family name, even moral reform cannot carry the weight of righteousness. Hallelujah means brag on Yahweh, so the spotlight belongs to Christ’s finished work. Only Jesus can be safely boasted about. [50:53]
