now as we followed the story we've seen that david and his loyal men had served this man nabel by providing protection for his servants and his flocks in the desert and there came a time when david and his men were hungry and having served nabel well they then asked him for help nabel refused and when this david heard this he was absolutely furious he vowed that he would destroy not only nabal but nabel's entire household as we followed the story we've seen how god in his mercy restrained david and he did this by sending a wise woman by the name of abigail she was nabel's wife [00:00:44]

abigail pursued peace she acted quickly she showed humility she recognized the problem she exercised faith and she anticipated blessing and god blessed abigail's intervention with marvelous success david trusted his grievance into the hand of god and he called off his retaliation if it had not been for abigail making peace david would certainly have gone through with what he said and if he had done that he would have regretted it for the rest of his life but god restrained him through abigail [00:01:39]

now god speaks to us in the bible in many different ways in the bible we find promises commands examples and warnings and i find it very helpful just in reading the bible to ask the question now is there a promise here for me to believe is there a command here for me to obey is there an example here for me to follow is there a warning here for me to heed and abigail is very clearly an example to follow she gives us a wonderful model of how to seek peace and pursue it [00:03:16]

nabel's servants recognized that they benefited from the protection of david's men they had served well they'd never lost a single sheep but nabal was ungrateful and when david asked for help he said well who is david who is the son of jesse so do you see nabel's foolishness here he is blind to the blessings of god that are all around him think of it he has a wise and wonderful wife he has loyal servants he has a thriving business his flocks have been protected by god's chosen king [00:04:48]

to be blind to the blessings you have received is the height of folly and jesus calls us to something better colossians chapter 3 and verse 15 let the peace of christ rule in your hearts and be thankful be thankful because to be ungrateful as the height of folly second nabel was unreasonable verse 17 he is such a worthless man that one cannot speak to him what an extraordinary phrase that is [00:06:00]

and jesus calls us to something better philippians chapter 4 and verse 5 let your reasonableness be known to everyone your reasonableness or james chapter 1 and verse 19 let every person be quick to hear slow to speak and slow to anger for the anger of man does not accomplish the righteousness of god then thirdly nabel was a fool as we try and build this profile because he was ungenerous [00:07:06]

god had blessed this man with an abundance and here his future king is in need but nabal is as mean and as tight-fisted as they come and to withhold when you could give is clearly the height of folly and jesus calls us to something better we are to be first timothy chapter 1 and verse 18 rich in good works we're to be generous we are to share with those in need and in this way the scripture says we will store up treasure for ourselves as a good foundation for the future [00:08:00]

and clearly here we have a part of nabel's folly to indulge yourself as the height of folly jesus calls us to something better ephesians chapter 5 and verse 18 do not get drunk with wine for that is debauchery be filled with the holy spirit now put these four things together and do you see here we have a little profile of what foolishness really looks like to be ungrateful to be unreasonable to be ungenerous to be self-indulgent [00:10:24]

trust god for justice now here i think is where this story speaks in a particularly powerful way to us and our culture today remember that at its heart this is a story about a grievance and david without any question had a genuine grievance nabel treated him horribly horribly and david was angry and he determined in his heart that he was going to take nabal down and the heart of the story is that abigail who seeks peace comes to david [00:12:42]

and exhorts him asks him pleads with him to trust his grievance into the hands of god and we saw last time that the essence of what she says to him her argument her reason that's presented to him is along these lines she's saying now david sure you can take nabal down you can do that very easily but do you really want to live with that on your conscience david why don't you simply trust god to deal with nabel [00:13:27]

david trusted justice into the hands of god on that basis he pulled back from taking vengeance himself he believed that god would be the one who would bring justice to nabal and god did bring justice to naval the lord struck nabal and he died now the title of this series is conflict justice and peace and it speaks to us today because we often live with a sense of injustice because people who do great evil often seem to get away with it [00:20:53]

and you see as you think about the difficulties that come to us in following our king jesus christ wise people commit to following jesus for this reason he is god's anointed king he's the son of god and though following jesus will bring many hardships it is through many tribulations the new testament says that we must enter into the kingdom of god those who live for the king have a glorious future [00:36:14]
