Right Where You're Supposed to Be: Lessons from Joseph

Joseph’s story meets anybody standing in the middle of some squiggly lines, wondering why God did not just take them straight from point A to point B. The journey can look like a little kid connected the dots with crayons, with turns that make no sense and lows that do not seem to balance out the highs. God does not always draw a straight line, but God never loses the plan.

Joseph’s life starts as the favorite child with the coat, the good table, and a gift he had not yet been developed enough to carry with humility. His brothers sell him out, Potiphar’s wife lies on him, prison holds him, and even the cupbearer forgets him. Yet favor keeps finding Joseph, because what God put in him still comes out of him. The prison cannot cancel the gift, the lie cannot destroy the calling, and the pit cannot become his resting place.

God uses every hard place to develop Joseph for the palace. The slavery teaches him that not everybody is nice. The betrayal recalibrates how he sees the world. The prison teaches him to keep serving, keep discerning, and keep trusting even when nobody seems to remember his name. The valley shows Joseph that God is still good when the sun is not shining.

Joseph’s development becomes necessary because Egypt needs somebody who can handle famine, people, power, and pressure. The call belongs to God, the gifts come from the Holy Spirit, and the results remain in God’s hands. Confidence, then, does not mean Joseph knows when or how things will turn. Confidence means Joseph knows that God put something in him, and that the appointed opportunity will eventually let what is in him come out of him.

God brings Joseph from jail to Pharaoh’s palace at the right time, not merely to make Joseph look blessed, but to position him for purpose. The signet ring, the chariot, and the authority over Egypt reveal that the painful road was never wasted. Joseph can finally say, “I’m right where I’m supposed to be,” because the journey made him somebody different.

The present reality does not tell the whole story of what God is doing. The straight line that somebody planned may never have been God’s plan. God calls His people to stop trusting only the vehicle, the blessing, or the changing circumstances, and to trust Him. All things, the good and bad, the smiles and pain, work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose.
