Lessons in Failure

Failure is not something anybody enjoys, and loss can become dangerous when it gets internalized as an identity. Failure can start saying, “I’m not good at anything,” then “I’m not lovable,” and finally “I’m not even savable.” But failure, handled rightly, can teach resilience, trust, and wisdom. God sometimes lets the training wheels come off so that his people learn that his ways are higher than their ways.

God does not leave people in the mess they made. God gets down in the mess, helps clean it up, and delivers his people from the enemy who wants to trap them in shame. Genesis 45 shows Joseph’s brothers facing a failure that was not small. They had wanted Joseph dead, sold him into Egypt, and then found themselves bowing before him just like the dreams had said.

Joseph does not deny the evil they did. Joseph says plainly, “I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt.” But Joseph also sees the hand of God beneath their failure. “You did not send me here, but God.” God used their failure to preserve life, to keep alive a remnant, and to protect the promise made to Abraham. The brothers did not deserve mercy, but God did not abandon them to their failure. God used even that failure for their deliverance.

The promise did not stop with Jacob’s sons. Jesus’ encounter with the Canaanite woman shows the promise reaching the nations. Jesus is in Gentile territory after a hard stretch of ministry, after John’s death, after crowds tried to force him to be king, and after many disciples walked away. The disciples had just heard that uncleanness does not come from the outside, but from the heart. Then an “unclean” Gentile woman comes crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, son of David.”

Jesus’ hard words about children’s bread and dogs expose the old categories the disciples still carried. The woman’s answer, “even the dogs eat the crumbs,” shows a faith that will not let go, a faith like Jacob wrestling for blessing. Jesus calls her faith great and heals her daughter. The one treated as unclean is shown to be clean by faith.

Romans 11 pulls the pieces together. God has consigned all to disobedience so that he may have mercy on all. Sin is not permission to keep sinning, but failure becomes the place where repentance learns God’s mercy. No one is unsavable, and no enemy-looking person is beyond the reach of the Christ who came to deliver the world.
