When Less Isn't Losing: Trust, Obey, Be Thankful

Judges 7 places Gideon in a place where the numbers do not make sense, and God does not try to make them make sense. God looks at 32,000 men standing against a Midianite army of over 135,000 and says, “You have too many men.” The word “enough” starts out sounding like a breaking point, like the moment when a person says enough is enough to pain, cycles, traffic, bad jobs, and long battles. But God turns that word another way and asks whether the real issue is not having had enough, but not believing what is already in the hand is enough.

Israel had lived in a dark cycle of sin, consequence, crying out, and rescue. The Midianites had come harvest after harvest, taking what Israel had worked for and leaving them with nothing. Gideon was not found as some big warrior with his chest out. Gideon was hiding in a wine press, scared that the enemy would take what little he had. Yet God called that scared man a mighty warrior, because God sees what fear cannot see.

God begins the victory by reducing the army. God reduces before He reveals, because when there is too much of human strength, noise, comfort, and activity, there is not enough room for His glory to be seen. The reduction was not random. God was protecting His glory, because Israel would have walked away saying, “My own strength has saved me.” Gideon still had to obey, gather the army, release the fearful, and go to the water, but obedience positioned him for the miracle while God alone produced the miracle.

God reduces contribution, then God reduces crutches. The soldiers who walked away looked like less help, but every loss forced Gideon to look higher. Whatever a person panics over losing reveals what has quietly become the source. A paycheck, relationship, comfort, plan, or reputation can become a crutch when peace rises and falls with it.

God also removes closure. God tells Gideon to take the men down to the water without giving the whole battle plan. Faith is challenged right there, because God often gives the next step before He gives the whole picture. Abraham had to go before seeing where, Moses had to lift the rod before the sea split, and Gideon had to obey before understanding. The army drops to 300, but less does not mean losing. The little bit in God’s hands is still enough, and thankfulness becomes the right response to what God has already done.
