Bob Hansen served the Lord faithfully in this church for more than 60 years, giving leadership on the board and on the elder committee and in many, many other roles. He has been a shining example of wisdom and of strength and of grace. Bob played a pivotal role in my life, chairing the search that led to the call to come and to serve this church as senior pastor. [00:00:21]

Father, our lives are immeasurably enriched by remarkable people who you give to us as gifts from your hand, and when one is taken from us, we feel our loss, and we feel a fresh impulse that we ourselves in our time should seek to live better lives. [00:01:48]

Abigail is the central figure in this story. She is, as it were, the savior figure. She saves the day, and we're going to look at the story today of how she did this and how she therefore points to Jesus, the savior of the world. Abigail is brought into the picture by the initiative of the servants. [00:06:48]

Peace is not achieved through making a demand. Peace is not achieved by making a demand. Now think about it. David here is clearly in the wrong. Yes, he had been treated horribly by Nabal, but there could be absolutely no justification whatsoever for what David was proposing to do. [00:13:12]

How does God lead us to repentance? Well, the Bible tells us, Romans chapter 2 and verse 4, do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? Do you see then that peace is not achieved through making a demand? [00:14:57]

The first of these is to act quickly. Notice verse 18, then Abigail made haste. In other words, as soon as Abigail heard from the servants what Nabal had done, she took action. She didn't say, oh well, let's just wait a little while and see what happens here. She moved towards the problem. [00:17:00]

Show humility. Verse 23, when Abigail saw David, she fell before David on her face and bowed to the ground. Now notice she has a profound awareness that she is approaching God's chosen king, and she comes before him as one who is seeking peace with great humility. [00:19:39]

If you are in a conflict and if you want to make peace, you have to recognize the reality of the problem. And here the problem is Nabal, and the problem is that Nabal is a fool, and Abigail doesn't hide this. She doesn't skirt around it. She doesn't try and minimize it. [00:21:45]

What Abigail does very wonderfully here is that she lifts David's horizon by getting his eyes off Nabal and all the grievance that Nabal has brought into his life and lifting up his eyes and getting them back on the Lord himself. She just keeps speaking to David about the Lord. [00:28:09]

Anticipate blessing. She says verse 30, and when the Lord, when God has done to my lord and God has done to David according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you and has appointed you as prince over Israel, when you're there on your throne, she's saying, then my lord shall have no cause of grief. [00:34:44]

God gave to Abigail success in this extraordinary intervention. Look at verse 32, and David said to Abigail, here's his response, blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me. Blessed be your discretion. So you see, recognizes her wisdom, and blessed be you. [00:36:52]

We saw earlier that the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness, so we must act quickly. We must seek peace with God and pursue it. You don't hang around. You must have peace with God. You must take action to move towards him and to seek the peace that he offers to you. [00:38:09]
