Practicing the Legacy (Mid-Year Check In) // Sunday Morning Service

The call to practicing the legacy begins with Psalm 133, where unity is called “good and pleasant.” The church as a family sounds nice on a lobby sign, but family becomes real when tension shows up and people still stay in the room. Monopoly fights, long car rides, worship preferences, personality clashes, and heated conversations all become pictures of what happens when real people live close to each other.

The New Testament refuses the easy options of “someone must be wrong” or “everyone should separate.” Paul and the Jerusalem apostles carried real tension, different audiences, different strategies, and even public confrontation, but they never stopped calling each other brothers. Maturity is not the absence of tension. Maturity is choosing to remain family inside of it.

Galatians 2 shows that God gives different assignments to faithful people. Paul, the “super Jew,” was given grace for the Gentiles, while Peter was given grace for the circumcised. Peter did not have to become Paul, and Paul did not have to become Peter. The body is made of many members, and unity does not require uniformity.

Acts 15 shows that the early church faced a moment that could have become a church split. Instead, the apostles talked, debated, listened, searched the Scriptures, and testified to what God was doing. The conclusion did not tie everything up with a neat little bow. The church discerned together and said, “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us.”

Galatians 2 also shows that love tells the truth. Paul opposed Peter to his face, not because Peter was a heretic, but because Peter was being a hypocrite. Correction was not rejection. Healthy families care enough to say, “wrong way, go back.”

Romans 15 shows that unity costs something. Paul raised money from Gentile churches to bless Jewish believers, even those who did not always understand him. Theology becomes believable when generosity crosses dividing lines. Pride, comfort, money, and the need to win every argument may have to be laid down.

The cross creates a bigger table. Jesus remains the center, calling everyone to the center. The church is not called to eliminate every tension, but to demonstrate that Christ is greater than every tension. A legacy of unity means truth is spoken, grace is extended, differences are honored, correction is received, and the world sees something different.

The church sent them on their way, and as they traveled through Phoenicia and Samaria, they told how the Gentiles had been converted. This news made all the believers very glad.
