Day 1: From Slaves to Sonship: Crying “Abba” Without Fear

The Spirit’s adoption breaks chains of fear, replacing slavery’s dread with a child’s bold cry. Those led by the Spirit don’t negotiate worthiness but claim belonging. “Abba” isn’t a distant title—it’s the intimate plea of heirs who know their Father’s voice. Creation itself strains toward this freedom, groaning for the full unveiling of God’s children. To cry “Daddy” is to reject old identities of striving and embrace the peace of being fully known. But if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. (Romans 8:13-16, ESV)

We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. To crucify passions isn’t grim duty but freedom from the tyranny of our own limited wisdom. Like Paul abandoning Pharisaic credentials, we trade resumes for reliance. The waterhole of self-trust keeps us thirsty; the river of God’s Spirit demands we release control to swim. [57:55]

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. (Galatians 5:24-25, ESV)

Day 4: Discipline’s Harvest: When Pain Prepares Glory

God’s correction isn’t punishment—it’s a Father shaping heirs. Hardship becomes holy when received as training for eternity’s weight of glory. Like Fannie Crosby’s blindness refining her vision for heaven, our trials school us in hope. The Father’s discipline stings but never abandons, proving we’re legitimate children. What the world calls loss, faith names as love’s chisel. [01:14:41]

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. (Hebrews 12:7,11, ESV)

Like farmers watching buds become fruit, we fix our gaze on the Author who finishes what He starts. Every delay becomes discipleship, training us to trust the Storyteller over the stopwatch. Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations. He will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his teaching the islands will put their hope. (Isaiah 42:1,4, ESV)

Sermon Summary

Paul’s letter to the Romans puts the gospel right in the center: it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes. Paul’s own life shows that truth. God took a man who trusted his education, his status, and his keeping of the law, and Jesus changed him forever. Christ showed Paul that righteousness does not come from confidence in the flesh. Righteousness comes from God through faith in Jesus Christ.

Romans 8 says that Christ’s atoning work reaches all sin: sin from last week, sin from twenty years ago, and sin that has not even happened yet. Jesus fulfilled the righteous requirement that the law exposed but could never accomplish in fallen people. The Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead now lives in God’s children and gives life to mortal bodies.

Paul says believers have an obligation, but not an obligation to the flesh. The flesh is not merely skin or a physical body. The flesh is life lived by self-reliance, personal striving, rushed planning, and the need to make everything better by human strength. The flesh seeks its own glory, then leaves people burdened, aggravated, fearful, and easily pulled into fussing and fighting. The Holy Spirit calls God’s children to put those misdeeds to death and keep in step with the Spirit.

The Spirit does not bring slavery and fear again. The Spirit brings adoption to sonship, full belonging in the household of God. God gives His children full rights as heirs and co-heirs with Christ, and the Spirit testifies that they belong to Him. This adoption gives access to God’s throne of grace with confidence, not as strangers trying to get God’s attention, but as sons and daughters crying, “Abba, Father.”

Paul also refuses to make childship a T-shirt, a bracelet, or a religious label. God’s children are led by the Spirit and called to live as Jesus lived. Christ’s people will suffer, endure hardship, and know discipline, but Jesus knows suffering too. Creation itself groans under bondage to decay, and God’s children groan inwardly as they wait for the redemption of their bodies.

Paul calls that waiting hope. God’s glory will outweigh present suffering, even when present circumstances feel loud and heavy. God’s people wait patiently and expectantly because suffering does not have the final word. God remains faithful, compassionate, patient, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. Christ secures eternal life, and nobody can take that away.
