#NaomisRestoration
“``Naomi didn't get her husband's back. She didn't get her sons back. The restoration that Naomi experienced in her life was not god rewinding the tapes and handing her back everything that she had lost. No. The plan of restoration that god had for Naomi was much bigger than that. The chapter in Ruth that opened with Naomi saying, call me Mara. I went out full and I came home empty. That self same chapter ends with Naomi holding a baby that the women of Bethlehem call a son born under Naomi. That baby was a little boy named Obed. Obed became the father of a little boy named Jesse, who became the father of a little boy named David. And then from David's line came a little boy born in a manger that was called Jesus, the Christ child. Naomi thought that she watched the end of her story die in Moab, but she was standing at the beginning of a harvest, standing at the beginning of a line and lineage that would bring Messiah into this world.”

#PraiseLeadsToTrust
“Trust came after praise. We saw that with Naomi and Elijah. We see it with Peter that purpose comes after the declaration of love. Peter or Jesus does not give Peter something to do in his ministry calling until Peter's love is first restored. Not his courage in him not his courage, not his confidence in himself, but his love. Because we can all serve out of guilt. We can serve even out of obligation. But if our living for the lord is not rooted in a love for Jesus Christ, then it will eventually run dry and the roots will be pulled up if it's not rooted in love for the lord. And that's exactly what Jesus knew and that's what he was confronting in Peter. He asks the only thing that really mattered. Do you love me?”

#StartPraisingAnyway
“But it didn't happen overnight. It happened chapter by chapter by chapter by chapter. If your love for god's gone crow grown cold today, it's not the end of your story yet. You may also be standing at the beginning of a barley harvest. But the way back to learning to love God again doesn't start because you feel differently this morning. It will start when you start praising god again anyway.”

#LoveRestoresPurpose
“By the time Jesus asked Peter that the third time, the text tells us that Peter was grieved because understanding is coming in. Peter is realizing that Jesus is not rubbing his face and then failure. Jesus is giving Peter an opportunity to say, I love you. for every time he had said, I don't even know you. That's love. That's restoration. Only after Peter answers three times does Jesus give him something to do. He says, feed my lambs. Feed my sheep. Feed my sheep.”

#HasYourLoveQuieted
“You haven't stopped believing. No. No. No. That's not what I'm saying. But maybe somewhere along the way, you felt a little bit like Peter. You felt like you had failed God, and you weren't worthy of the love that God has for you. Or maybe you've been so consumed by grief and devastation like Naomi that you don't know if you have the strength to pick up the pieces or if God even wants to help you pick up the pieces, or maybe you have simply been worn down through the daily grind and you're exhausted like Elijah. But somewhere along the way, your love went quiet. I believe the question that Jesus would challenge us with this morning is, Do you love me?”

#ComeBackToGod
“You've been going through the motions. You stand when everybody else stands. You say amen when it's expected. But if you're honest with yourself and with the lord, you feel numb on the inside and you've been hiding it well enough that the people next to you don't even know or have any idea, but god knows. he's not asking anybody to explain to him how you got here. He already knows. He doesn't need an explanation. He's just asking us to come back to him.”

#SacrificeOfPraise
“When your love for God has grown cold and praise does not feel natural, it feels like work, it feels like effort, like you're saying words that your heart is not behind. It's just a rote routine thing that you're doing, going through the motions. There's no emotion or feeling behind it. That's why it's called a sacrifice of praise. Because praise does not wait for that warm and fuzzy and good feeling to return. Sometimes praise begins with lifted hands and a voice that is speaking and feet that are dancing and a body that is moving, and we get that feeling when the praise comes. But we have to offer the sacrifice of praise sometimes before that warm and fuzzy feeling will return.”

#ThreeDenialsOneRestoration
“There have been three times prior to this that Peter had denied even knowing who Jesus was. And then three times after the resurrection, Jesus asked him the same question. Do you love me? He didn't ask, do you still believe in me? He didn't ask him if he was gonna continue to follow him. He didn't even ask Peter if he was sorry. just asks about love. Three times, three denials, one for one.”
