Small Group Bible Study Guide: The Weight of Spiritual Leadership (Micah 3)
Bible ReadingMicah 3 (ESV) 1 And I said:
“Hear, you heads of Jacob
and rulers of the house of Israel!
Is it not for you to know justice?—
2 you who hate the good and love the evil,
who tear the skin from off my people
and their flesh from off their bones,
3 who eat the flesh of my people,
and flay their skin from off them,
and break their bones in pieces
and chop them up like meat in a pot,
like flesh in a cauldron.”
4 Then they will cry to the Lord,
but he will not answer them;
he will hide his face from them at that time,
because they have made their deeds evil.
5 Thus says the Lord concerning the prophets
who lead my people astray,
who cry “Peace”
when they have something to eat,
but declare war against him
who puts nothing into their mouths.
Therefore it shall be night to you, without vision,
and darkness to you, without divination;
the sun shall go down on the prophets,
and the day shall be black over them;
7 the seers shall be disgraced,
and the diviners put to shame;
they shall all cover their lips,
for there is no answer from God.
8 But as for me, I am filled with power,
with the Spirit of the Lord,
and with justice and might,
to declare to Jacob his transgression
and to Israel his sin.
9 Hear this, you heads of the house of Jacob
and rulers of the house of Israel,
who detest justice
and make crooked all that is straight,
10 who build Zion with blood
and Jerusalem with iniquity.
11 Its heads give judgment for a bribe;
its priests teach for a price;
its prophets practice divination for money;
yet they lean on the Lord and say,
“Is not the Lord in the midst of us?
No disaster shall come upon us.”
12 Therefore because of you
Zion shall be plowed as a field;
Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins,
and the mountain of the house a wooded height.
Observation Questions- According to Micah 3, what specific accusations does God make against the leaders, priests, and prophets of Israel?
(see Micah 3:1-5; [01:04:01])- What is the consequence God promises for the leaders’ corruption and injustice?
(see Micah 3:4, 12; [01:17:26])- How does Micah describe his own calling and attitude in contrast to the other leaders and prophets?
(see Micah 3:8; [01:13:09])- In the sermon, what modern examples did the pastor give of “cultural compromise” or churches drifting from God’s truth?
([01:06:28])
Interpretation Questions- Why does God hold leaders to such a high standard, and what does this mean for people who have influence in any area of life?
([01:07:15])- The sermon talks about “spiritual cannibalism”—leaders devouring their own people. What does this look like in today’s world, both inside and outside the church?
([01:11:34])- What does it mean for God to “withdraw His presence” or go silent, and why is this described as the most severe consequence?
([01:17:26])- Micah says, “As for me, I am filled with the Spirit of the Lord.” What does it look like for an ordinary believer to make this kind of stand today?
([01:27:49])
Application Questions- The sermon emphasized that leadership is not just for pastors, but for every believer in their own sphere. Where do you have influence (family, work, friendships), and how are you using it? Are there ways you might be neglecting your spiritual responsibility?
([01:07:15])- Have you ever felt pressure to “go along with the crowd” or to compromise your faith for the sake of fitting in? What was the situation, and how did you respond?
([01:10:47])- The pastor warned about the danger of calling evil good and good evil. Are there areas in your life where you have started to accept something as “normal” that God’s Word calls out as wrong? What would it look like to repent and change course?
([01:10:47])- When have you experienced or witnessed “prophetic integrity”—someone speaking God’s truth even when it was unpopular or costly? How did it impact you or others?
([01:13:09])- The sermon described God’s silence as a form of judgment. Have you ever gone through a season where God felt distant? Looking back, what do you think contributed to that, and what helped you return to Him?
([01:17:26])- Micah’s declaration, “As for me, I am filled with the Spirit of the Lord,” is a personal challenge. What would it look like for you to make that your daily prayer and commitment? Are there specific steps you need to take to be able to say that honestly?
([01:27:49])- The sermon called for repentance, humility, and a return to God’s Word. Is there a specific area where you sense God calling you to repent or to take a stand for truth this week? How can your group support you in this?
([01:27:49])
Close in prayer, asking God to fill each person with His Spirit, to give courage for truth, and to keep the church faithful and full of His presence.
