Leadership among God’s people carries a heavy responsibility, as leaders are called to know what is just and to act in ways that honor God rather than seeking personal gain or power. When leaders fail in this calling—when they love evil and hate good, exploiting those they are meant to serve—the entire community suffers, and God’s presence and blessing are withdrawn. The warning is clear: leaders who devour and neglect their people, prioritizing self-interest over justice, will face God’s judgment and silence. May we pray for and support leaders who seek God’s justice and righteousness above all. [01:10:47]
Micah 3:1-4 (ESV)
And I said: Hear, you heads of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel! Is it not for you to know justice?— you who hate the good and love the evil, who tear the skin from off my people and their flesh from off their bones, who eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them, and break their bones in pieces and chop them up like meat in a pot, like flesh in a cauldron. Then they will cry to the Lord, but he will not answer them; he will hide his face from them at that time, because they have made their deeds evil.
Reflection: In what ways are you tempted to put your own interests above the well-being of others, and how can you intentionally seek justice and care for those around you today?
True spiritual leaders are called to proclaim God’s truth boldly, regardless of the consequences or the approval of others. When prophets and preachers speak only what people want to hear, or serve for personal benefit, they lead God’s people astray and lose the ability to hear from God. Instead, God calls His servants to be filled with His Spirit, to speak with justice and courage, and to confront sin and rebellion with honesty and love. May we desire leaders—and be people—who value God’s truth over comfort or popularity. [01:13:09]
Micah 3:5-8 (ESV)
Thus says the Lord concerning the prophets who lead my people astray, who cry “Peace” when they have something to eat, but declare war against him who puts nothing into their mouths. Therefore it shall be night to you, without vision, and darkness to you, without divination. The sun shall go down on the prophets, and the day shall be black over them; the seers shall be disgraced, and the diviners put to shame; they shall all cover their lips, for there is no answer from God. But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the Lord, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression and to Israel his sin.
Reflection: Is there a truth from God’s Word you have been hesitant to speak or live out because of fear or discomfort? What would it look like to stand for that truth today?
When God’s people mix religious ritual with moral failure—justifying evil while invoking God’s name—they create a toxic system that leads to ruin. God will not dwell where injustice, bribery, and the shedding of innocent blood are tolerated, even if religious language and practices are present. The warning is that invoking God’s name while committing evil brings judgment, not blessing, and the community suffers as a result. Let us examine our hearts and practices, ensuring that our worship and actions align with God’s justice and holiness. [01:27:49]
Micah 3:9-12 (ESV)
Hear this, you heads of the house of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel, who detest justice and make crooked all that is straight, who build Zion with blood and Jerusalem with iniquity. Its heads give judgment for a bribe; its priests teach for a price; its prophets practice divination for money; yet they lean on the Lord and say, “Is not the Lord in the midst of us? No disaster shall come upon us.” Therefore because of you Zion shall be plowed as a field; Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins, and the mountain of the house a wooded height.
Reflection: Are there areas in your life where you justify wrong actions or attitudes while still claiming God’s blessing? What step can you take today to align your actions with God’s justice?
Each person is faced with a choice: to follow the Spirit of God with courage and integrity, or to drift into compromise and rebellion. The call is to declare, like Micah, “As for me, I will follow the Lord,” regardless of what others do. God desires a people who are filled with His Spirit, who pursue righteousness, and who are willing to stand apart from cultural pressures and spiritual apathy. The decision is personal and daily—will you be one who brings blessing or one who brings harm because of your choices? [01:31:30]
Joshua 24:15 (ESV)
And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
Reflection: What is one specific area where you need to declare, “As for me, I will follow the Lord,” and what action can you take today to live that out?
God calls His people to pray for their leaders and for the church, that all would turn from wickedness and return to Jesus Christ. The health of the community depends on leaders and members alike seeking God’s Spirit, confessing sin, and pursuing holiness together. When we humble ourselves, repent, and pray for one another, God brings renewal and blessing. Let us commit to praying for our leaders, our church, and ourselves, that we would be a people who honor God in all things. [01:41:58]
1 Timothy 2:1-2 (ESV)
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.
Reflection: Who is one leader—whether in your church, community, or nation—you can pray for today, asking God to fill them with wisdom, courage, and a heart for justice?
Today’s gathering was a powerful reminder of the weight and responsibility of spiritual leadership, both in the church and in our personal lives. We began by celebrating new life and transitions—dedicating young Dimitri to the Lord and praying over our college students as they step into new seasons. These moments are not just ceremonial; they are a call to intentional discipleship, to impress the love and commands of God upon the next generation, and to send our young adults into the world grounded in faith and community.
Turning to the Word, we explored Micah 3, where God, through the prophet Micah, brings a sobering indictment against the leaders of Israel—kings, priests, and prophets—who had abandoned justice and led the people astray. The imagery is stark: leaders devouring their own people, prophets speaking only for personal gain, and priests perverting worship for profit. God’s response is equally severe: when leaders exploit and corrupt, He withdraws His presence and refuses to answer their cries. The warning is clear—spiritual neglect and moral compromise at the top will bring ruin to the whole community.
Yet, Micah stands as a contrast: filled with the Spirit, he proclaims truth and justice, regardless of the cost. This is the model for all who lead, whether in the church, the home, or the workplace. Leadership is not about personal comfort or cultural approval, but about faithfulness to God’s ways, even when it means standing against the tide. The challenge is not just for pastors or elders, but for every believer, because in Christ, we are all called to be priests and leaders in our spheres of influence.
The call is urgent: Will we be like Micah, able to say, “As for me, I am filled with the Spirit of the Lord,” or will God have to say, “Because of you, destruction has come”? Each of us must choose daily whom we will serve. Repentance, humility, and a return to God’s Word are the only way to ensure that our lives and our church remain places where God’s presence dwells and His blessing flows.
Micah 3 (ESV) — 1 And I said:
“Hear, you heads of Jacob
and rulers of the house of Israel!
Is it not for you to know justice?—
2 you who hate the good and love the evil,
who tear the skin from off my people
and their flesh from off their bones,
3 who eat the flesh of my people,
and flay their skin from off them,
and break their bones in pieces
and chop them up like meat in a pot,
like flesh in a cauldron.”
4 Then they will cry to the Lord,
but he will not answer them;
he will hide his face from them at that time,
because they have made their deeds evil.
5 Thus says the Lord concerning the prophets
who lead my people astray,
who cry “Peace”
when they have something to eat,
but declare war against him
who puts nothing into their mouths.
Therefore it shall be night to you, without vision,
and darkness to you, without divination;
the sun shall go down on the prophets,
and the day shall be black over them;
7 the seers shall be disgraced,
and the diviners put to shame;
they shall all cover their lips,
for there is no answer from God.
8 But as for me, I am filled with power,
with the Spirit of the Lord,
and with justice and might,
to declare to Jacob his transgression
and to Israel his sin.
9 Hear this, you heads of the house of Jacob
and rulers of the house of Israel,
who detest justice
and make crooked all that is straight,
10 who build Zion with blood
and Jerusalem with iniquity.
11 Its heads give judgment for a bribe;
its priests teach for a price;
its prophets practice divination for money;
yet they lean on the Lord and say,
“Is not the Lord in the midst of us?
No disaster shall come upon us.”
12 Therefore because of you
Zion shall be plowed as a field;
Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins,
and the mountain of the house a wooded height.
Leadership matters. People of God can fall or succeed based on the leadership of a church. A nation can fall based on the leadership or rise. In this case, you're looking at a mix of a different environment than us, but similar to our culture, but what you have is you have the king and the leadership that would be around him, and the wealthy people of that day would have held a lot of power in the city of Jerusalem, and then you would have the priests and prophets that would come and the religious leaders. They had a great impact upon the nation of Judah. [01:01:53]
God's people in this day had abandoned his ways, like many churches of our culture today choose to be a church of culture instead of a church of God. A church of idolatry instead of a church that lifts up the one true God who cannot be found in any idol. Amen? And so when we look at that, and I'm not knocking on other churches, but if you can relate to what I just said, I really believe with all my heart those are not churches. Because they've so abandoned the ways of God. May that never be here. Amen? [01:06:30]
At some point, God will hold all leaders who fail him accountable. In fact, a lot of y 'all don't like this text, but in Hebrews chapter 13, 17, it says you're supposed to obey me. Wow, how does that sit? But do you know what goes on beyond that? He says, Because I have to give an account for you. I'm responsible for you. I'm responsible for the things I teach you. I have to give an account. I don't even know how this is going to play out. But I have to give an account for your soul. Have I shepherded you the best that I can? Have I preached God's word to you the best that I can? [01:07:15]
Leaders are supposed to do what's right. They're supposed to do what's right with God. Not tickling your ears, not giving what you want, not trying to please you, but lead in a way that honors God and exalts his way. That's leadership. When leadership fails to do that, God might bring judgment upon that leadership. [01:08:15]
How quickly we can fall away as God's people. But leadership should never stray. They should be consistent. We are supposed to know what's just. So listen. In verses one through four, the leaders are devouring the people of God. So the king and those leaders and the wealthy people, they're totally discarding the people and they're not thinking out for the good of the people. They're only thinking of themselves. That is failed leadership. [01:09:17]
Leaders, you should know better. You're supposed to know what's right and what's just. Yet you love good. No, you hate good. And you love what? Evil. Imagine that. Has our culture not gotten that? What God says is good, we say is evil. What God says is right, culture will say is wrong. All these things have been taken. This doesn't happen by accident. It's been happening throughout the history of mankind. [01:10:27]
Corrupt leaders who exploit God's people, God will not listen to their cries. [01:12:56]
Religious leaders are supposed to speak God's truth, yet these prophets are trying to lead God's people astray. No pastor worth their salt will ever want to see you be led astray. I will tell you this with all integrity to the best of my ability. I don't know everything. I don't have every answer. But I've never stepped in the pulpit to ever say, I want to lead you astray. I always want to lead you to God's ways. And that is what true preaching does. They don't accept what culture says. They don't accept what others might say. They accept what God says and then they preach that. [01:14:21]
Spiritual leaders don't serve for personal gain, they serve at the pleasure of the Lord amen and they should promote God's justice always. [01:21:23]
God will judge a corrupt system and this corrupt system is being brought through by the priest and the judges and how they're administrating over the people of God in verses 9 through 11 the leaders aboard justice they don't want justice they want whatever is right for themselves and they pervert what is right calling what is right wrong you'll see that zion will now be built on bloodshed they would kill someone to get their way. [01:21:41]
There's a toxic mixture of religious perversion and moral failure. Listen, God's people have been good at this. Can I have enough ritualistic stuff and sound enough religious and combine it with some moral failure and still make it seem pleasing and good? Who does that sound like? Satan, the one who will deceive even the elect, twisting and just twisting truth enough to deceive. We need to be on guard. [01:24:31]
They evoke God's name in all of this. Oh, in Jesus name send me a hundred dollars and God will bless you ten times the prosperity gospel right that's far from God's heart. I'm not knocking another religion but there's a lot of prosperity gospel out there instead of the true gospel. When we look at the invoke on God's name and they commit evil while they're doing it could you imagine in Jesus name and I'm murdering somebody in Jesus name and I'm robbing their homes in Jesus name and while the people are out at war I take advantage of their situation and take their crops for myself these are the type of things that are happening and they say it's okay and it's justifiable they evoke the name of God while they commit evil. [01:25:25]
We need to be careful because we can do that too. We can be lulled into thinking everything's okay we can be lulled into well we got to be nice because we're Christians come on right you know or you know I can't really speak up about Jesus at work because I might get fired we could go through all kinds of lists I could give you where we can justify our actions to not do what's right but God calls us to do what's right. [01:26:46]
When leaders lead in wickedness the whole community suffers. God will not dwell in injustice. That's why Hebrews 13 that I started off says obey your leaders because they watch out for your souls and it's not a joy for you not to do that it's a joy for you when we live for God together and we obey the Lord together amen that's what God calls a joy when we're in this together. [01:28:46]
We should pray for godly leaders we should pray for the leadership of this church and leaders of other churches and denominations that they will get their act together if they're not that God will turn them from their ways of wickedness and turn the church back to Jesus Christ. [01:29:14]
Let Micah's voice echo in our own lives and here I hope I can do justice Micah says ask for me ask for me I'm going to be filled with the spirit of the Lord ask for me I'm going to speak the truth of Jacob's rebellion and their sin or will God say because of you I want God to say ask for me I want him to see and say chris sandy all the way around the barb in this whole room because of as for me you followed my spirit you kept my ways you spoke my truth I'm going to be bringing blessing I don't want ever God to come into our church and say because of you destruction will come because of you these things will happen but in this case there's only one position we can take as for me I want to be filled with the spirit of God as for me I want to bring justice and courage as for me I want to proclaim rebellion and sin I never want God to say because of you because of you destruction will fall because of you zion will be plowed like a field because of you jerusalem will be in ruins because of you the temple mount will be a high thicket. [01:30:17]
I think God always gives us a choice choose you this day who you will follow as for me in my house I will follow lord micah's saying the same thing I have chosen this day and as for me my decision is with God so the question comes to each of us in here maybe you're not a christian yet you may not even know what that means or maybe you thought you were a christian and you're hearing this sermon you're like man he lost me on that rainbow flag he lost me on this or that then you are far from God and you need to come back and say as for me I will follow the spirit of God and as for me I want Jesus in my life if you don't have Christ in your life I encourage you today ask him to come into your life. [01:31:44]
If you're a Christian and you're struggling with all this cultural crap that comes our way and excuse me there's no other way I could have said a better word but I won't that's what it is it's a bunch of dung that they fling out there to us and they tell you you have to take it no you don't you follow God ask for me I will follow God Christian where are you can you say ask for me I'm filled with the spirit of God as for me I will stand with justice and righteousness and boldness and courageousness can you say ask for me or will God say because of you that choice is yours today. [01:32:37]
I never want to see this place like a high thicket I never want to see God's church in ruins and I never want to see the destruction of God where he does not hear his people cry out to them because they're so evil they're practicing spiritual cannibalism that's what they did in that day and I think it's recorded for us so we have a warning I know this is a hard sermon and maybe the shoe doesn't fit for a lot of us but I think it does in this one quote as for me or because of you which one will you be. [01:33:35]
If you know you can declare, ask for me like Micah, lift your hand to God Amen If you're struggling, you're somewhere in between that as for me and because of you Would you raise your hand as a form of confession to God? Amen Thank you all for your sincerity Father God, as we start to come to a close today I pray that we all have made a declaration of our lives to return to you The fact that people raised their hands in such a way is a positive thing Because in that day, hands would not have gone up In that day, in days of Micah, it was too late The people were so far gone So God, thank you today And wherever we're at, and whatever our struggles may be And whatever our turmoils might be And the things that we're wrestling with in our lives God, help us and guide us through those things Help us to really learn what it means to follow you And to be like Micah Ask for me Ask for me I am filled with the Spirit of God I will be bold and courageous And I will declare the rebellion and sin Of the people. [01:41:17]
May we be a place where we come before you In righteousness and truth this day We're seeing one more verse, God And no one comes, we'll close We thank you for those that have already come Those that are praying And hearts that are being moved May we follow you now And make that decision in Christ's name Amen.
