Lead Me to the Rock Higher Than I

Psalm 61 opens with David overwhelmed, not proud. David does not come bragging about being king, slaying giants, or having victories behind him. David comes like a child and says, “Hear my cry, oh God, attend unto my prayer.” Prayer is not a polished little ritual out of a book. Prayer is a broken heart asking God to bend His ear down and hear.

David’s cry shows that God is not hindered by location. “From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee” means no place is too far, too dark, too low, or too buried for God to hear. Jonah cried from the belly of the whale, miners can be heard deep in the earth, and God’s ear is better than any man-made listening device. Discouragement does not stop Him. Being overwhelmed does not put a soul out of His reach.

David’s condition also does not hinder God. “When my heart is overwhelmed” means when the heart is fainting, smothered, drowning, and at the end of itself. God is not limited by weakness. God is drawn to the needy heart. The end of self is not a place to tie a knot and hold on, but a place to let go and let God.

David does not ask for a ladder, a light, or a lift. David asks, “Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” The rock is not self-reformation, grit, or the ability to put up with trouble for a little while. The rock is Christ. The rock is higher, stronger, holier, nearer, and safer than anything the overwhelmed heart can build for itself.

The Word of God stands with that same firmness. God’s people get into trouble when the rock is lightly esteemed, when Scripture is corrected instead of believed, trimmed instead of trusted, and handled with a penknife instead of reread with faith. Christ does not move over into worldliness and set up shop there. Christ brings His people out and leads them up to where He is.

The rock will not move, but Christ will move the needy soul to Himself. Burdens, sickness, family trouble, unanswered questions, and storms beyond human strength are not beyond Him. God cares for His children more tenderly than earthly parents care for their own. The overwhelmed heart may not understand God, but God understands the heart, remembers that it is dust, and gives grace at the rock.
