Ezekiel’s call, “Turn and live,” comes with a command that no fallen heart can fulfill by its own power. God commands Israel to cast away transgressions and make a new heart and spirit, yet the prayer rightly confesses that without grace upon the heart, no one turns and no one lives. The command to love God with all the heart, soul, mind, and strength goes straight to the heart of the matter. It does not ask for a little effort, a sincere attempt, or enough religious endeavor for God to make up the difference.
The law strips away every rationalization. Paul’s confession in Romans 7 says that the good he wants to do, he does not do, while the evil he hates is what he keeps doing. Jeremiah’s deceitful heart and Cain’s murder of Abel show that free will and good intentions do not solve sin’s problem. Moses sets life and death before Israel, yet Israel does not choose life. The law is a mirror, but it is also meant to break the back of self-righteousness.
Erasmus treats God’s commands as proof that human beings retain the ability to obey them. Luther calls that hogwash. An imperative tells what ought to be done, not what sinful people can actually do. “Love God” does not mean that sinners possess the power to love God as he deserves. The law gives the knowledge of sin, not the power of the will. God’s holy demand exposes the misery that pride tries to hide.
Ezekiel’s declaration that God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked is pure gospel. God does not desire the sinner’s death, and God has given Christ Jesus as the answer. Christ alone has loved the Father with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength. Christ alone has done everything sinners were supposed to do and did not do.
The treasure-in-the-field picture turns human pride upside down. Christ is the man who finds the treasure, and sinful people are the treasure he purchases at the cost of his own life. Faith gives up on number one and says, “Lord, you are my righteousness.” Peace does not rest on trying harder, praying longer, or fasting more, but on Christ’s righteousness alone. Those who stay close to him begin to learn love for God and neighbor, yet even that remains a beginning under grace.

Key Takeaways
- 1. The law breaks self-righteous confidence The law does not flatter the sinner’s ability or invite a bargain with God. The command to love God wholly reveals how far the heart is from the love God requires. Brokenness is not the end of hope, because a broken sinner is finally ready to look outside himself for righteousness. [31:31]
- 2. Commands reveal duty, not ability God’s imperatives declare what ought to be done, not what fallen human beings can perform. The assumption that a command proves human ability quietly turns grace into a reward for effort. The law leaves no room for boasting because it exposes sin rather than empowering the will to overcome it. [34:31]
- 3. Christ loved the Father perfectly Christ alone has loved God with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength. His obedience is not merely an example for sinners to imitate but the righteousness sinners need before God. Salvation rests on what Christ has done, not on what human effort can add. [36:35]
- 4. Christ purchased the sinner as treasure The sinner is not the man hunting for God as the highest treasure. Christ finds the lost treasure and gives up his life to make it his own. This grace gives worth to those who have nothing in themselves to offer God. [37:58]
- 5. Faith abandons number one for Christ Faith stops making peace with failure by calling it sincere effort. Christ becomes the sinner’s righteousness, life, and only hope of heaven. The peace of God belongs to those who trust his righteousness alone.
