Revelation 2:1-7 “To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: ‘The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands. I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name's sake, and you have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. Yet this you have: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.”
[01:16:53]1 Corinthians 13:1-3 “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.”
[01:12:59]Matthew 22:37-40 “And he said to him, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

- In 1 Corinthians 13:1–3, what impressive gifts and sacrifices does Paul describe, and how does the absence of love affect their value? [01:13:38]
- In Revelation 2:2–3 and 6, what does Jesus commend about the Ephesians’ work, endurance, and stand against evil and false teaching? What picture emerges of this church? [01:27:24]
- What was wrong beneath the Ephesians’ outward faithfulness, and what examples show how that same problem can appear in Christian service? [01:38:45]
- In Revelation 2:5–7, what response does Jesus require, what consequence does he warn about, and what promise does he offer those who overcome?
Interpretation questions
- How do Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 13:1–3 help explain Jesus’ correction of Ephesus? Why are impressive results or costly sacrifices not enough to show that a believer’s service pleases Christ? [01:14:00]
- Jesus commends the Ephesians for rejecting evil and false teaching. What distinguishes loving correction from correction aimed at shaming someone or proving superiority? How might that difference affect a difficult conversation? [01:33:24]
- Why does Jesus call the Ephesians to remember and repent rather than simply become more active? What would a change of mind, attitude, and actions involve for someone already serving faithfully outwardly? [01:42:35]
- The lampstands represent churches. What does the warning about removing Ephesus’s lampstand reveal about the seriousness of lovelessness? Why would a busy church need to hear this warning? [01:43:43]
Application questions
- Think about one regular way you serve, give, or participate in church life. What tends to motivate you—affection for Jesus, concern for people, obligation, recognition, or something else? What might you need to bring honestly before him? [01:40:13]
- Jesus sees costly faithfulness that others may overlook. Where are you finding it hard to keep serving or remain faithful right now? How does knowing that he sees your effort encourage you? [01:28:21]
- Can you remember a time when love for Jesus and others gave you particular joy in serving? What has changed since then, and what might remembering that time help you recognize about your heart today? [01:42:01]
- Think of a recent disagreement about truth or a conversation about someone’s sin, without naming anyone unnecessarily. Were you more concerned with helping the person or winning the point? What could a loving next step look like? [01:38:55]
- Jesus calls for renewed love, not merely more activity. In one responsibility you already have, what would repentance look like this week—in your attitude as well as your actions? How could this group support you? [01:43:09]
- Jesus promises eternal life with him to those who repent and trust him. As you face a particular burden or discouragement, how could the hope of being with the Savior help you serve with love rather than simply push through? [01:47:26]
