Chasing Lady Wisdom!

Solomon stands in Proverbs as the young king who knew he did not know how to rule, how to come in, or how to go out. God meets him in that weakness and offers him anything he wants. God gives him wisdom because Solomon asks for wisdom to lead God's people, not long life, revenge, or riches. Proverbs then becomes the little book where that God-given wisdom is handed down, right there in the Bible, so the simple are not left guessing.

Solomon names wisdom in the female tense, as her and she, because wisdom is meant to be cherished, pursued, listened to, and loved. Lady Wisdom is not treated like a cold idea on a shelf, but like a companion who nurtures, guides, corrects, and gives life. Proverbs 3 and 8 place Lady Wisdom beside God in creation, there when the earth, heavens, rivers, springs, atoms, and everything else were put together. Lady Wisdom was there from the beginning, so her counsel is not cheap advice from somebody with no credentials. That picture gives her the right to say, “Come to me, you who are simple,” because she knows how life works.

Lady Wisdom can call the foolish an idiot and still be merciful, because her offer is to make the idiot smart. The Bugatti and little-book picture presses the point hard: if a man found a little book that made him wise with money, marriage, work, people, and success, any sane person would run home and read it. The little book is Proverbs, and Lady Wisdom is offering to upgrade a life beyond imagination.

God orders the steps of the righteous through her voice saying, “Don’t go there. Don’t deal with that. Back up. Get out.”

Proverbs finally warns that Lady Wisdom will not be ignored forever. Lady Wisdom calls loudly in the street, but if the simple laugh at her counsel, brush aside her training, and hate knowledge, disaster can come with no answer from her. Solomon’s call is not casual curiosity, but a covenant hunger to seek her like gold, buried treasure, and jewels.
