How Do You Know When God Is Calling You? - 1 Kings 19:19-21

1 Kings places Elisha’s call inside the bigger story of Israel’s unfaithfulness. Israel’s kings repeatedly turn from God, bringing idolatry, oppression, and injustice, yet God does not abandon his people. God raises up prophets as covenant watchdogs, calling kings and people back to repentance. Elijah stands against Ahab and Jezebel’s worship of Baal, sees God answer with fire on Mount Carmel, and then runs into the wilderness exhausted and afraid.

God meets Elijah not with more fire, earthquake, or storm, but through a gentle whisper. God reassures Elijah and gives him a new task: find Elisha and anoint him as successor. 1 Kings 19:19-21 then shows Elisha at work, plowing his field with twelve teams of oxen. Elisha is not seeking the spotlight or waiting for a dramatic spiritual moment. God finds him in the middle of an ordinary day.

Elisha’s response is striking because he does not keep a backup plan. Elisha slaughters the oxen, burns the plow for fuel, and gives the meal to the townspeople. The old life is gone, and his response is decisive. Elisha does not know the miracles, battles, hardship, or responsibility ahead, but he knows God has called him to take the next step.

Faith, then, is trusting the God known with the future unknown. God was working for Elijah when Elijah thought everything was falling apart, preparing Elisha as a successor and assistant. God was also working in Elisha’s ordinary faithfulness long before Elijah arrived at the field. God often does not give steps one through ten; God says, “Take step one,” and then shows step two.

Christian discipleship asks whether Jesus is worth the cost. Plans, comfort, ambition, reputation, control, and even good things can become things held too tightly. Jesus does not ask his people to trade something valuable for nothing. Christ gives forgiveness, reconciliation with God, a new identity, a new purpose, and eternal life. Jesus is enough.
