Because He Knew and Loved, He Served

John 13 brings freedom through Christ right down into the dirt. John says Jesus knew His hour had come, knew the Father had put all things under His power, knew He had come from God and was returning to God. Jesus knew who He was, and Jesus loved His own to the end. Because He knew and because He loved, He served.

The towel and basin show that authority in the kingdom does not have to grab for position. Jesus had all authority, all power, and all purpose, yet He got up from the meal, took off His outer clothing, wrapped a towel around His waist, and washed dirty feet. The job belonged to the lowest servant in the household, the one who handled the dust, the mud, the stink, the mess. Jesus took that place on purpose.

Peter shows the shock of grace. Peter knew Jesus was Lord, Rabbi, teacher, friend, and brother, so Peter could not imagine Jesus washing his feet. Jesus answered that unless He washed Peter, Peter had no part with Him. Guilt, shame, disgust, and disgrace do not get to define the one Christ has washed. In Christ there is no condemnation, and freedom does not come from dipping a foot in the water, but from letting the Savior actually make clean.

The table also exposes the danger of a loud opinion without love. Truth without love becomes useless, even when the point being made sounds right. Religious actions without God in them become meaningless, just like Ecclesiastes says, hevel, vapor that cannot be held. The call is not simply to speak loudly at the table, but to get down on hands and knees and serve.

Jesus washed Judas’ feet too. The one who would betray Him was still at the table, still received the servant love of Christ, still had the Lord kneel before him. Psalm 23 then turns the prepared table into something deeper than a chance to gloat over enemies. The table in the presence of enemies becomes a place to serve, not a place to lord victory over someone else.

Freedom through Christ stays the same no matter the sin, the place, or the person. Christ is the chain breaker, the shepherd, the kite string who guides and holds. Salvation is not in an illustration, not in a person on a stage, not in religious stuff. Salvation is in Christ alone, the Lord and Savior who came into the mess, washed the dirty, and gives life forever in the house of the Lord.
