Parenting for Kingdom Greatness: Raising Courageous Faithful Children

First Samuel 17 places David in the valley, but the text makes clear that the victory did not start in the valley. Jesse begins the shaping of David at home, with bread, grain, cheese, sheep, and a simple command. The small errand trains David in the way life works: responsibility comes with reward, and a child cannot be trained to expect something for nothing. David rises early, leaves the sheep with a keeper, and goes as Jesse commanded, because obedience starts at home before greatness shows up in public.

Obedience opens the door to opportunity. Goliath looks like trouble to Saul and the soldiers, but faith sees him as a target. Saul looks at Goliath as too big to hit, but David looks at Goliath as too big to miss. Faith changes how a child of God looks at what is being looked at. God wraps opportunity in trouble, and David steps into the moment because he was already walking in obedience.

God uses past experiences to build present faith. David does not speak from arrogance; David speaks from confidence built by walking with God. The lion and the bear become a file cabinet of what the Lord has already done. Private places shaped David before public places used David. David can say, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear, he will deliver me,” because faith says it before faith sees it.

Saul’s armor becomes a picture of what does not fit. David cannot walk in another man’s armor, and a child cannot walk in somebody else’s tradition when God has given that child a sling. Tradition cannot replace truth. Other people’s gifts do not fit, and other people’s fear should not become a young person’s covering. David takes off what slows him down and uses what God gave him.

David’s victory comes with the anointing, agility, aim, and age. The anointing in chapter 16 prepares him for the opposition in chapter 17. Agility keeps him from fighting Goliath on Goliath’s terms. Aim comes from private practice before public pressure. Age proves that God does not wait until a person is old to use that person.

The five smooth stones show that with God it may not take as much or as long as fear said it would. The first stone sinks into Goliath’s head, and the fallen giant becomes David’s footstool. Christ gives the final victory, and the Holy Ghost gives power in weak areas. God calls parents to build children in the living room so they can stand in the boardroom, the classroom, and every valley where giants talk loud.
